      Public service workers ignored

      Pros

      Great people to work with at the branches. Lots of great idea sharing.

      Cons

      Inconsistent management. People who actually work with the public are ignored in the decision making process. Poor benefits. Poor salary. Arbitrary rules and enforcement. And now there's the "occurrence" garbage. If your kid is sick at school, if your car breaks down, no matter how much leave time you have, it's an "occurrence", and if you get 6 of those, no matter how good you are, you're out. Idiotic new HR and collection management policies. Stay FAR away from this mess.

      If you want to be a librarian, don't work here

      Pros

      Patrons appreciate us, and sometimes we get to go to cool meetings or conferences. The fellow staff members are usually nice, but anyone in management can't be trusted.

      Cons

      All decisions made at higher levels. Librarians can't make decisions about the collections in their own branch, or how to organize their own branch. We can't even make decisions on what to discard! Programing has to be justified too much. The "occurrence" thing alone is a reason not to work here. Oh, and if you disagree with management, you are labeled "afraid of change" or "old" or "stuck in your ways". I am none of those, yet I think they are WRONG.

      Pros

      Loved working with the other staff. My direct manager was wonderful, I enjoyed working with the public, but the upper management was not responsive to the needs of the underlings. They didn't like constructive suggestions.

      Cons

      Work hours are not consistent and it is difficult to be able to plan very far in advance. Plan on working a lot of weekends and nights. Also don't plan on having much time off around the holidays. If a huge snow is falling, don't expect that the Library will close.
