Pros

salaries are high compared to lateral roles elsewhere

Cons

* toxic culture is an understatement; the executive leadership team is extremely unprofessional * the mission is respectable, but unfortunately, those in charge are not * being berated for simple mistakes, misunderstandings, or differences of opinions is an unfortunate staple, and leadership likes to instill a sense of fear, division, and distrust amongst the staff, so employees feel defeated, alone, and powerless to defend themselves or their teammates * major paranoia about people "out to get them" or "take what's theirs" which is only a sign of deflection as they try to manipulate those around them * so much turnover for such a small company (~8 people) and always in the same roles - recruiters are well aware of their awful reputation, and many refuse to work with them * there is no room for growth * until recently, the staff was only made up of young white women

Pros

If you are money motivated, this is a good place. The salaries are great. Not the best benefits, though.

Cons

My time at JMF had ups and downs but it was ultimately a very abusive and toxic environment. There is always yelling and fighting, and even when I wasn't involved in the issue it was still a tense atmosphere. The wife co-founder can be lovely but she is also regularly very nasty to her employees; I've heard her call one incompetent, constantly criticizes work and throws tantrums daily. When I say tantrum I mean I've actually seen her stomp the ground or throw folders or slam doors on more than one occasion. She will explicitly tell you to do something a certain way and then get upset you do it in the very way she instructed you to do it. The executive director is also pretty moody. She definitely plays favorites and can become explosive over really small things. In one day, she told me to inflate the number of programs we were funding at a board of directors meeting (which is deceptive and illegal) but then turned around and berated me for putting cups in the wrong place (which is an innocent mistake). When I say berate I mean she yelled at me for several minutes and then mocked me when I tried to fix the situation (situation being cups not being in the right place). It was the most unprofessional situation I've ever been in. Normally, this kind of behavior would be managed but there is no HR department or acting HR person, so staff doesn't have anyone to voice complaints or concerns to. Beyond the way staff is treated, there is also not a lot of room for upward mobility. It is a very small organization and not a lot of room to move up.
