Pros

Talented and passionate teams who care about supporting educators.

Cons

A lot of change. Loss of relationships that have been carefully managed and grown now lost.

Pros

The perks are ridiculous. Seriously.

Cons

The perks don’t make up for the lack of competitive salary. It might cost you $10 a week for lunch, but I’d rather have a better salary. A lot of the old guard haven’t worked anywhere else (despite their youth) and are super set in their ways, incredibly biased and resistant to change. Because the culture is that there’s no hierarchy there are power plays in every team, making it so stressful. Basically, the louder you and and the more ruthless you are, the more likely you are to get the better assignments and pay rises. The entire leadership is related, and on top of that, because they’re related the younger ones either pull rank and make messes and get away with it because they’re related to the CEO (causing so much tension and resentment in the teams) or they dump way more work on them, and because they’re family they can’t say no, and no one else can either. It’s pretty disgusting. This is a company that doesn’t understand company culture, has never done an unconscious bias course, and is not diverse or inclusive. They basically think that more perks will distract you from how rubbish the culture is. It’s toxic, and because they haven’t noticed yet, it’s only going to get worse.

Pros

Salary, small holiday acknowledgement gifts of cookies or Starbucks gift cards.

Cons

No healthcare or company contribution to 401K. Manager wants staff to constantly scrimp and save by doing things themselves on-site, but then Exec spends lavishly against budget unnecessarily. The ole do as I say, not as I do. U.S. employees are treated as ‘less than’ from staff in NZ. Regardless of the Kumbaya company culture of being part of the ‘Kamily,’ of equal treatment of employees, staff performance reviews and improvement plans, it does NOT apply to U.S.- based employees. Repeat. It does not apply to U.S.-based employees. NZ staff are coddled beyond comprehension and celebrated for just doing their job. Salaried U.S. staff is expected to go far beyond one’s duties and working hours without any compensation. Performing very well, being respected by one’s peers and external associates, and contributing to company goals bear no merit or compensation from management without drinking the Kool-Aid. Management has little-to-no experience working at other companies which impedes their ability to see the big picture. They focus on minute details that only delay projects without any measurable improvements— resulting in extra effort and off the clock time for worker bees. They hire experienced professionals to develop plans, processes, and train inexperienced staff in NZ, then let the professional go without any justification because they can. Get hired— Pull them out of a major jam— Set them up for future successes—> Bye, bye
