Baffling experience at Knack

Pros

-Ops team is amazing -Other employees are generally wonderful -Annual retreat

Cons

-Poor cx team morale -Non-competitive pay -Many employment expectations not communicated before being hired (such as on-call hours) -Many employment benefits have strings attached or aren’t true (unlimited PTO; birthday off) -lack of communication across the organization and within the cx team -Not a great QA system so many product issues surfacing at once, with releases/rollouts -Company culture essentially flushed down the toilet (I was not here for the acquisition, but this seems to be the agreed-upon point at which this started) -Leadership positions filled by “numbers/metrics” people

Pros

They use some modern tech on front and backend, so it's not going to be a nightmare for your resume.

Cons

This company has given up on becoming proftiable. They will likely sell it off (again) after the recent layoffs show a 10-20% improvement in profit. Cultural nightmare. New CTO is entirely political actor and generally will make your life a nightmare so that he can properly manage his relationship with the relatively clueless new owners of the company. Senior Architects are hired in without any input from team. Your work will be constantly micromanaged and criticized (at 11PM) so that you can be laid off at a moments notice if it suits the CTO. (You will a very ungenerous 2 weeks of severance). The new profit strategy is to hire the lowest paid employees possible. All in all it's fine due to acceptable pay and resume building. Having no hope for the company as a whole is a good way to work here. Focus on getting your tickets done and accept the fact that promotion is impossible. Don't accept any greenfield projects, they typically lead to getting laid off as the (many) owners posture to one another about why it's all the engineers' faults.

Great team culture in spite of antagonistic senior leadership

Pros

Great group of peers to work with, getting to chat with everyone and be part of the vibrant culture was a true privilege. There are many extremely talented people on the staff who were a pleasure to work with and learn from. Semi-annual meetups were the highlight of my experience, both for camaraderie building as well as project collaboration. The work is meaningful and customers are doing really cool things on the platform.

Cons

Your success and happiness at this company will be inversely correlated to how closely you have to work with the CEO. He's a special kind of nano-manager/10X Developer combo who won't give you space to breathe while also making sure you know he could probably do your work better than you if he just had the time.
