Pros

* Lakeshore, like most companies, has good people in the trenches. They show up, work hard, share a laugh, and go home. And generally speaking, people support one another within each team. * Making educational products for young children comes with a sense of moral satisfaction. * Work-life balance is better than most companies. Nobody will receive the "stink eye" leaving after an 8-hour work day assuming the job is done.

Cons

"North Korea... Really?..." you say. Well, let's compare. 1) Family Monopoly, Generation to Generation Company control is passed down from parent to child, generation to generation. Unfortunately this means the people in power do not have the experience nor intelligence that typical top executives are required to have. The two grandsons (3rd Generation) are now in control as CEO and President of Merchandising respectively. The CEO brings in the qualifications comparable to a back alley sports bookie. The other plays serves as "Lennie" from 'Of Mice and Men'… always under the constant protection and sheltering of the CEO. Otherwise it would be disastrous. 2) Family Propaganda As you stroll through the Lakeshore halls, it wouldn't take you long to find 'Family Tribute Art'. Company event posters, work anniversary buttons, employee awards, department signs, etc. All shameless opportunities to celebrate the Owners in cult-like fashion. Cartoon caricatures of the family are the cornerstone to most designs. Lakeshore even finds a way to twist the most basic employee tributes to their own family's favor. Annual bonuses, a time to celebrate employee hard work, has been perverted into an annual suck-up celebration to the Owners. Each department must create elaborate “Thank You” posters in appreciation of their 'generosity'. Halls are lavishly decorated as if Caesar himself was returning to Rome. Then comes the Family Parade to pass out the bonus checks. Mindless applause, fake tears, dancing. The only thing missing is a pinkie-ring kiss worthy of the Pope (or Mafia Godfather). 3) Closed to Outsiders / Dissenters are silenced Be prepared to "do", not think. The owners micromanage all strategies & decisions across every department, even if they have no experience on the matter. Department budgets are forbidden too. Therefore the sole reason for your job is to execute. Period. If the process is inefficient, shut up and do the job. If the project outcome is not best practice, shut up and do the job. If the design lacks a good customer experience, shut up and do the job. Oh, you have a problem with that? HR is waiting by the door holding a box of your possessions. Needless to say, outside Managers / Directors / VPs are on a revolving door of early resignations and terminations. The inner circle of C-Levels & SVPs surrounding the owners are paranoid "YES men/women" with no shame, spine, or career ambition. They are completely content in being Executive Chambermaids at Chez Lakeshore until retirement. 4) No Integrity or Moral Compass Lakeshore has a twisted view of "right and wrong" in how to treat employees. Self-Centered Arrogance? Professional Ignorance? Who knows. Of course they'll boast about initiatives to improve work-life such as training programs, summer giveaways, and better break rooms. I suppose a Farmer could also list steps taken to improve his cattle's quality of life. But what is missing is the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) to understand what employees really want. To be treated with respect & trust, and to be seen as professionals... not children or cattle. For example, salary raises are sent home in sealed envelopes to avoid "confrontations". Requests for an employee gym are "under consideration", meanwhile the owners enjoy their secret workout room in the building. Then there are the weekly car washes & detailing of the owners personal cars using warehouse employees. (Of course they aren’t courteous enough to do this discreetly on the back lot. Its done in front of the employee entrance.) Don't forget the 'mystery calculation' used to pay annual bonuses. Its "too complicated" for us simple folk to understand. Can't forget the parties too... the owners wives & kids are invited to every event, day or night. However, employees are told to attend alone. Lastly, North Korea isn't the only one with bombs. "F-Bombs" are dropped frequently by the owners in the face of anyone that doesn't do things to their satisfaction. 5) Revenue comes from the Government Lakeshore sells high-priced educational materials considered "luxury" to most teachers. When the government pumps more money into schools, teachers can splurge on Lakeshore. However, when the government slashes funding, sales suffer. And that's when it gets interesting. Lakeshore is proud to admit its never had a "layoff". Instead, Heads of Departments are instructed to terminate their weakest employee for "under performance". Unfortunately this company lives and dies by the politicians in office. And Lakeshore isn't ashamed to admit it. During the last election, the CEO stood at the all-employee meeting and suggested everyone "vote Hillary" since Democrats typically invest more in education. 6) Controlled Media My personal favorite is how Lakeshore tries to suppress the truth to the rest of the world. When GlassDoor.com started to expose employee frustrations, their solution was... raise employee morale? Address the concerns? Nope. Have HR post FAKE reviews. One after another after another... the 5-Star Fake Reviews kept going up until the GlassDoor rating was acceptable. Of course, HR isn't bright enough to write somewhat realistic reviews. “Cons: NONE! I love Lakeshore!” Really? At one point, HR posted a Fake Review claiming to be a person on my team. It contained wrong titles, incorrect team details, and glowing praises for... you guessed it... the HR Dept. Hmmm. I cannot recall walking around my team hearing “the HR Dept. is my favorite part of Lakeshore!" Conclusion: If you just want to put your head down, not speak, crank out 8 work hours, go home, and cherish your 3% annual raise... you’ll have a 25-year anniversary parking sign waiting for you (with the owners' caricatures of course.)

Lakeshore Learning Materials Response

I wanted to personally respond to your post because I have a good idea who it’s coming from—and I’m sorry to hear you’re still so upset about your separation from Lakeshore. We always look at posts from current and past employees to discover ways we can improve, but your post contains too many inaccuracies to address. One inaccuracy I must respond to is the offensive way in which you characterize our people, using words like “mindless” to describe some of the most intelligent, creative and driven people anyone could hope to work with. Contrary to what was said in your review, we greatly value new talent and believe their fresh perspectives and outside experience play a significant role in the growth we experience year after year—regardless of which political party is represented in the White House. It is true that Lakeshore is a family-run business. A passion for education is something that’s been shared by multiple generations of our family, and it’s incredibly rewarding to come to work every day and play an active part in our company’s mission. But that passion isn’t unique to my family. It’s also shared by the wildly talented team members who have joined us over the years. And, unlike in North Korea, all of our employees can leave whenever their personal or professional expectations are not being met. So, I do wonder why you chose to stay here for five years if you were as unhappy as you suggest. I hope creating this post has helped you get a few things off your chest and that you’re able to move on toward a rewarding future. – Bo Kaplan, CEO

Pros

Profit-sharing opportunity, which you don't see much of these days Compensation isn't bad compared to other companies, but the workload is. Preschool onsite, but I'd NEVER send my kid there!

Cons

First let me start off with the CEO and former CEO. They often scream and yell at the top of their lungs at people cussing like sailors. I witnessed this myself multiple times, including one time to two pregnant employees. I've seen them get in women's faces, throw things (not at people but still) and, no joke, stomp their feet up and down the hallways...or and did I mention there is a preschool onsite a few doors down from the CEOs office where this all goes down? It's a bizarre environment that is hard to explain until you live it. Everyone wants out but not everyone gets out. They lock you into something so specialized that you can't leave easily. They expect, yes expect, you to provide and answer your personal (not company paid) cell phone whenever you are on vacation, sick or out of the office. The workload doesn't allow for time off - you are expected to cover your desk even when you are out so there is NO work/life balance. Too many to list all, but depending on what department you are in here are a few: No room for growth or new ideas Want new ideas to grow the business but shoot them all down because they know everything CEO thinks he knows everything, including Marketing 45 mins lunch - no more and no less and only at 12:45pm Use an illegal points systems to keep track of employees time off, sick, etc. If you are thinking of taking a job at Lakeshore, run for your life!

Pros

Casual dress and profit bonus after more than 2 years.

Cons

Wow where do I begin with this place. First let me say these negative reviews are SPOT ON. And it is blatantly obvious that the positive reviews are written by HR or employees who are probably forced to do so by HR. Really NO cons? you'd make them more believable by adding at least a few REAL negatives. This company is a bunch of former teachers who lack the education, experience and skills to be managers. Their systems are old outdated and archaic. The offices are an ugly old converted warehouse with no windows where cubicles are piled on top of each other and people are forced to work in the tiniest of spaces. No privacy everyone can hear each other's conversations whether they want to or not no matter how inappropriate or not. The company is portrayed by their human resources as the wonderful happy family business. What that means is nepotism is still alive and well and everyone else is disposable. They do not value employees or people here and if you do something wrong or go against the Lakeshore rules you are GONE. No questions asked, no warnings, no discussions just gone. I had heard many horror stories about how that happens, but didn't believe it until it happened to me. I was there for one month. I had been told that the manager in that specific department was new and she might not know what to give me to do. Well they were right in that aspect. After a week I realized there was no REAL work to do, just a few duties that would take more than an hour two to do. I spent most of my time filing in a cold ugly warehouse, not what I was hired to do. This department had 5 managers which I thought was strange but it quickly became apparent that the department head was delegating ALL her work to all the others therefore there was no real work for her to do or give me. The old saying, if you're not good or don't know what your doing surround yourself with good people. Then you can go to meetings and shake your head and pretend you know what your doing. I also learned while I was there that her last assistant didn't last more than a few months either. Two assistants gone in less than a year, wow! doesn't seem like we are the problem. So imagine my surprise when I got a call from HR, when I had not been talked to by said manager directly, not once. Nothing was told to me about my performance or concerns she had although I was only there for a few weeks, a normal company would take that into consideration. To be told "you are not following up enough" I was in shock. Following up on WHAT? there was no REAL work given to me. Despite all that I know I am better off and to get out of that place. This company gives you the feeling you are in elementary school I guess what they do there affects how they treat their employees and make their rules. Everyone comes and goes around the same time, everyone takes lunch at the same time (have to take lunch at the same time as the owners in case they call and need you, wouldn't want to make them wait!) you have a feeling like you are being "watched" or someone is going to snitch on you. And there are snitches. Those are usually the brown nosers who've been there for so long they think this place is normal. The people who have been there for so long don't know anything else, they don't know that there are real companies out there that actually value their employees and treat their employees like adults and not children. Companies with real managers who are educated and have the experience and actually know how to manage people. This company should have a revolving door on it!
