Strong product and talented team undermined by poor leadership and toxic culture
Pros
The Legl product provides innovative solutions that clients love. As a testament to its efficacy, client churn is remarkably low and customer referrals are common. Moreover, the team is filled with subject-matter experts who are not only skilled but also incredibly amiable and cooperative, fostering a collaborative workspace. Efforts are also made by the People team to boost employee morale through social events and token gestures of appreciation. Remote-first working is great.
Cons
Despite the fact that Legl's employees are exceptionally hard-working, diligent and deeply committed to the company's success, the work environment poses serious challenges that undermine these efforts. This issue is exacerbated by a top-down culture of fear that stifles innovation and discourages open communication. The CEO's autocratic / bullying style has fostered a work atmosphere where both senior and middle management are reluctant to voice differing opinions, often acting as yes-men to avoid being in the firing line. This toxic culture has led to unnecessary stress and high turnover, both voluntary and involuntary, among a staff otherwise focussed on contributing to Legl's ambitious goals. It's disconcerting to join a company and immediately witness a high rate of employee departures.
