Way too many problems here

Pros

MedHOK feeds you once a week, though the food is not that healthy. (Maybe this is really a con!)

Cons

Any company with no collaboration, no standards, no policies, no procedures, no attention nor appreciation for quality, no repeatable processes designed and adhered to, no metrics, and an aloof, arrogant, and dishonest management which allow egos to run amuck, rewards backstabbing, and promotes the erection of barriers to resist change is the poster child of what’s wrong with healthcare IT today and this is MedHOK. It is NOT a healthcare company but a software company. However, they have employed few people who know anything about building software. The juvenile code ends up riddled with rookie failures. Questions and requests from customers reveal that even they are beginning to doubt MedHOK understands the SDLC/SILC process and may be on to the realization that they are dealing with a hack. I question their compliance as I have seen non-compliance issues end up in the enhancements bucket. The code errors – like misspelling and grammar issues, non-capture of exceptions, error messages delivered after updates and record closures (a MedHOK personal security system works like this… after glass break, the front door busted down, the cat kicked, the refrigerator raided, the unmentionable drawer riffled, all electronics absconded with, and the burglars are ten minutes down the highway, the alarm goes off!), updates in VIEW ONLY mode, no standard editing of fields like state(their software is so special it cannot handle it!), phone numbers, and zip codes (have to allow for alpha characters because of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico? Seriously?) They can’t even successfully unstring character delimited data. These low-hanging fruit are all non-productive distractions to the real problems, for example, exceptions that reveal very sensitive client information. The reaction to this? ‘It’s just the client data on their system, not a problem.’ If you can successfully access a record from one part of the product but not the other – the solution is, just try another record. Want a promotion? Lose the clients requirements and hide the fact. Want to change production code/records without traceability? No problem. Can’t conduct code reviews because they need software to do it. Software does software reviews? Don’t provide test results and just tell the client it worked fine when it failed. Want better customer service? Make PM’s accountable and responsible but don’t give them the authority to do their job. (But make sure that the project status, whether in Green, Yellow or Red state, the G or Y or R is capped!) In the odyssey for truth in what is wrong with healthcare, pundits dealing with public health and patient safety – from Harvard to John Hopkins – decry the pitiful state of healthcare IT. MedHOK is a co-conspirator. I went to be an architect for change; instead I became a plumber, trying to stick fingers in the dyke of problems caused by a feckless and bloated management. I ran out of fingers. Though management has created this toxic environment, a manager told me not to trust, so sit with your back to the wall. Caveat emptor.

Blind Leading the Blind

Pros

There are a few smart and capable people still here.

Cons

This place just keeps making bad decisions. The new CEO has been in charge for over a year now and his biggest accomplishment is moving offices. A lackluster product team mixed with bad, untested code, leads to implementations that fail. The CEO's brilliant idea to solve for this was to change leadership among the team that runs projects and clients. This leadership has done what you might expect from those who previously were clueless in past roles within the organization, as they are clueless here too. They have continued to ignore anything that could make a positive impact to our actual jobs, and instead decided to "reorg" into a model that will not work. They are untrustworthy and clearly playing favorites, embarking on two faced attacks to those not pretending to be best friends. We're on our own now more than ever to make our projects succeed and this is not the answer. Annual bonuses have been the saving grace of this company for years, but now the CEO is trying to lower and phase them out. It is known many of the new management brought in over the last year, including our clueless leadership mentioned above, are now hiring with no intention of making bonuses part of the compensation plan. For those of you reading these reviews because you are considering applying to this company or are interviewing, be warned, the overwhelming majority of positive reviews since 2018 come from the company pressuring employees to do so.

I regret that you are discouraged given the ongoing commitment and hard work by our associates and leadership team. While we continue to strive for improvement, we have made significant progress over the past year, with a number of notable accomplishments, including: 1. establishing clearly defined and aligned Mission-Vision-Values, establishing regular Town Halls (6 in 2018, 1 in Feb '19), 2. an open-door policy (I personally met with more than 150 employees (including most Project Managers) in late 2018), 3. establishing an "Employee Engagement Committee" to ensure our associates' views are being heard, 4. bringing in new talent (more than 50 new hires joined the team in '18 and more than 20 have joined already in '19), 5. recruiting new members of our leadership team (50% of the team joined in the past year) and promoting deserving employees from within whenever possible, 6. introducing a process and platform for monthly 1x1 check-ins between the employee and their manager and semi-annual reviews to ensure each employee is aligned with their departmental and company goals, 7. and yes, we have moved from Class C to Class A office space – almost doubling our workspace, providing convenience for our employees, partners and customers (restaurants, hotels within walking distance) with beautiful views and specifically designed to fit our needs. This is just one example of MHK investing in our associates and striving to becoming the employer of choice in the Tampa-St. Pete market. Based on your post, it appears you are a current employee. Given my philosophy and approach, I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you 1x1 to better understand your challenges and work to make this a more rewarding experience for you. I haven’t received any Project Manager requests to meet this year…it would be great to hear from you directly. Gary, President MHK

Horrifying Management

Pros

Pay is decent and the people who work there are hard-working and honest.

Cons

The management expect you to be on call 24x7 and you will get yelled at by the owner if you don't answer your phone at 3A.M. The management is known for it's lack of care for employees. Being yelled at and belittled is everyday occurrence for any employee. The infrastructure is archaic at best. They use 3rd party hosting providers to host storage and essential IT services for their customer base, but neglect the essential internal infrastructure required for an organization of this size and complexity. For example, no Active Directory and no file shares for the employees to use to share files. They rely on Google Drive. After working hard there for 7 months, they unceremoniously let me go 2 weeks before Christmas with no reason. My boss said, "You're not being let go for performance. You've worked very hard." I later came to find out that they were purchased by Mitt Romney's venture capital firm Bing Capital. Unless you're a masochist and want to be miserable every day, I'd advise not going to work for MedHOK.
