Pros
I agree with the other reviews in that it was underpaid to an extent, but it didn't start off that way. Being outside working up a sweat is my favorite form of exercise, so the job itself was a very good fit for my personality. My first supervisor was very organized, interactive, made sure we stayed hydrated, and gave us 5 minute breaks every hour on brutally hot days. I traveled to each store in my area to get full-time hours into mum season, and after the garden center closed I was invited to work in the floral department year round under a different supervisor. That's when everything changed.
Cons
My new supervisor had been thrown into the position last minute, and occasionally came to the store in a flurry of chaos to help me with large shipments. I wasn't at all trained on the differences of caring for indoor plants, and I soon learned I had replaced someone that was fired for that very reason. My supervisor's dismissive demeanor and erratic behavior lead to me giving notice. Before I finished out my two weeks the regional merchandising manager finally met with me and explained what I was doing improperly, and asked me to return in the summer. I declined as I found my immediate supervisor extremely unpleasant and chaotic to work with as evidenced by the fact that everyone this supervisor managed quickly quit or was let go. Now that I work for a competitor I see how grossly underpaid, overworked, and exploited I was at the end of my tenure with Masterpiece.
