Micromanagement overshadow work-life balance

Pros

Work life balance is great until its changed for no legitimate reason. Great to work for a company that has a real world impact on parents and specific womens issues. Some great people on all the different teams who are great at their jobs and provide great support.

Cons

Management offers lip service to feedback and company values while failing to act on either. A bereaved team member was told any leave beyond one week would come out of annual leave a stark example of the disconnect between Mumsnet's public image and internal reality for staff. Culture is cliquey and siloed, with playground dynamics between teams and bad behaviour routinely ignored when flagged. Confidence is actively knocked through micromanagement, diary monitoring, and a CRO who publicly calls out sales staff for childcare issues. No real progression, no meaningful training, and proactive ideas are stamped out. The bonus scheme is confusing, changes frequently, and sits well below industry standard. Mandatory socials and WFH register-taking add to the controlled atmosphere. The overall environment feels cult-like particularly around senior leadership.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re sorry to read that this was how your time at Mumsnet felt, and we take feedback like this seriously. We know that hybrid working only works well when expectations are clear and applied fairly. Our current policy is two days a week in the office and three from home, alongside a term-time work-from-anywhere policy for up to 10 weeks a year. We believe office time has real benefits for collaboration, learning, creativity and team connection, while still giving people meaningful flexibility. We also expect employees to have childcare arrangements in place while working, though of course we try to be flexible when unexpected situations arise. We want Mumsnet to be a place where people can do excellent work, develop, and feel supported. Learning and development is a significant focus for us, including dedicated fortnightly sessions and our Getting to Excellent framework. We also offer up to a week’s compassionate leave on full pay as standard. We do not believe in micromanagement. That said, where performance is not meeting the standards needed by the role or team, we think it is fair to provide clear guidance, support and oversight. We appreciate that this can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but the intention is to help people understand expectations and improve. We’re a relatively small organisation, so progression does not always follow fixed grades or tenure-based steps. However, we care a great deal about feedback and development. As you know all managers go through an annual 360 appraisal process, and we run monthly anonymous employee feedback surveys, where, you'll be aware, scores across a range of measures are routinely strong. Finally, our social events are intended to create connection in a hybrid workplace. They are not, and have never been, mandatory. That said, we recognise that Mumsnet will not be the right environment for everyone. We do believe strongly in high performance, collaboration and open feedback, and we’ll continue working hard to make sure those values are reflected in people’s day-to-day experience.

Pros

The owner loves to boast that parents will “never miss a sports day”

Cons

In reality the company is filled with miserable employees (mostly women) who are burdened with the golden handcuffs of having the flexibility of working around childcare but hating your job.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that this was your experience, although we don’t recognise the description of Mumsnet as a workplace filled with unhappy employees. We take employee experience seriously and run monthly anonymous feedback surveys. Scores across a range of measures are consistently high, which gives us confidence that this description does not reflect the broader experience of our team. That said, we know no workplace is perfect, and we’ll continue listening carefully to feedback and looking for ways to improve. Flexibility is important to us, and our policies are designed to support the whole team, not only parents. We operate a hybrid model with two days a week in the office and three from home, and we offer up to 10 weeks a year of work from anywhere during school holidays. This applies equally to parents and non-parents. We do offer enhanced parental leave for both men and women, but otherwise our flexible working and other benefits are open to everyone. We want Mumsnet to be a place where people feel trusted, supported and able to do excellent work, and we’re sorry this wasn’t your experience.
