Pros

Excellent technical and animal resources. Excellent clinical research infrastructure. Possibility of many collaborations internally. General funding stability although rapidly loosing purchasing power due to inflation.

Cons

Poor institute level management in the Center for Cancer Research (intra-mural NIH). Complete lack of vision. Attitude of maintaining status quo even for underperforming research and clinical groups. Underutilized clinical center. Rapid loss of a critical mass of physician-scientists to the extramural community in recent years.

Pros

Many resources for research, especially if you are well connected; tends to be a good old boy culture

Cons

bureaucracy of federal government prevails; leadership old guard; upward mobility very limited in science; administrators promoted often even though management messy and chaotic
