Constant Anxiety

Pros

- Access to founder connections - Office location - Fast-growing sector - Relatively market-rate (startup) salaries + equity

Cons

- Quick to insult applicants/partners, and fire employees - Bro culture, lack of diversity in management, the team is not female friendly - One co-founder is great to work with but lacks practical experience; the other is a bully, severely lacking emotional intelligence - Gaslighting, confusing/conflicting feedback with lack of context - As a result, the team spends too much time on the subjective rather than the objective - The team is often afraid or anxious to stick up for one another to founders, resulting in overall mediocre team well-being In my time at NorthOne, 1 person quit because of the above and 2 different people sought out medical support for severe stress and anxiety.

Unstable and toxic, company is trying to hide its layoffs

Pros

Unlimited PTO, smart and entrepreneurial teammates, flexible work schedule/remote-first policy, employee resource groups, teammates are helpful and willing to answer questions

Cons

Lots of uncertainty and shifting priorities, top-down decisions made from upper management, high-stress environment and heavy push to meet deadlines, people suddenly let go for seemingly no reason (ie. not related to performance). they did 3 rounds of layoffs in less than 6 months, if that tells you anything. the leadership team even promised every remaining employee after the first layoff that it would be "the only round of layoffs" giving people a false sense of job security. There is a huge turnover rate, nearly everyone who wasn't let go left on their own terms for a better opportunity. Those who were laid off were discouraged from posting anything about it on LinkedIn or Glassdoor; the company is trying to sweep their internal instability under the rug. Hopefully this is no longer an issue with the latest NLRB ruling about severance agreements. This company doesn't have their priorities straight, they haven't found product-market fit and it shows in the metrics, they don't live by their supposed values or truly care about their employees, and the leadership team lacks organization and transparency. Founders are clearly operating at the beck and call of their investors without regard to company culture. It seems like a good place to work at a surface level, but once the honeymoon phase wears off, it quickly becomes clear that this is a toxic place to work. Other cons include: below-average benefits (no 401k match, subpar insurance, promise of a learning stipend that was never delivered), below-average pay and lack of career development opportunities in many roles. In short: don't work here. You can find much better.
