Confusing Favoritism

Pros

Flexible working. Can start at 6 and go home at 2. Most people are great to work with. A few managers too.

Cons

Laser Quantum used to be the ideal place to work. Since Novanta took over, we are all just numbers now. Recently went through a redundancy process which was unjustly unfair. A lot of experienced people were let go over worse employees due to obvious favoritism. A lot of promises were made and not kept. Senior Leadership Team don't believe unhappy employees. Too many managers. Have to follow Novanta's "values" - very American. Only given career opportunities if you are close with managers, otherwise you get stuck on the bottom rung forever, regardless of ability.

Pros

The engineering department used to be top-notch, filled with talented individuals. Now, it's overrun by incompetent fools and sycophants. Time to leave or ready to get sacked- if you are honest individual.

Cons

This isn't just a technical company; it's a den of manipulators! Behind the facade lies a trading firm that thrives on manipulating their subpar products. Their employee turnover is massive, and the management couldn't care less about retaining genuine talent.

Pros

Plenty of friendly employees, many of whom regularly meet to socialise outside work Relaxed environment with flexible working hours

Cons

Most benefits were taken away following Novanta takeover of Laser Quantum, including: annual pay rises, 2 hours allowance for medical appointments that did not have to be worked back, free cereal for breakfast due to early starts. The change of Laser Production Engineer job title to Laser Manufacturing Technician and deskilling of the job has devalued employees in manufacturing. Lower than average salary for the industry, and many people are underpaid comparative to other staff with less responsibility. Overtime often goes unpaid. Nepotism cannot be avoided due to the large number of close relationships within the company. Female employees experience sexism but there are no consequences for the men who treat them differently than other engineers. Lack of recognition for hard working employees who are treated no differently than those who use the relaxed environment to slack off. Literally no opportunities for career progression. Other departments have no interest in employing people from manufacturing even with relevant degrees and years of experience. Job vacancies are filled with external candidates and smart, capable employees with experience have no opportunity to progress. It appears there is no desire here to retain talent, this company would rather people left so they could be replaced with someone who they can pay less. This is very disappointing and short sighted.
