Pros

Omatic provides software and related services to nonprofit clients whose missions mostly better the planet. Being part of this ecosystem, while special, no longer compensates enough for the multiple areas of company decline. The office has a beautiful view of the Charleston harbor and Ravenel Bridge. Coffee, beer, and protein powder are usually available. Benefits are good, including unlimited PTO, but family insurance is a bit pricey. Generous company parties (but wear your mask)

Cons

The company shift from a focus on providing purpose-built technology for nonprofit clients to being beholden to investors looking for a return has destroyed the company culture and meaning. A current inexperienced CEO who, while intelligent and motivated, lacks ability to perform the role, and as a result, “leads” by fear. Those who don’t get in line are generally fired or are smart enough to leave. His favorites are obvious. His immature micro-managing undermines other managers’ decisions, leaving managers handcuffed with the knowledge that their decisions can be overruled at the CEO’s whim without discussion. This tornadic environment contributes to a culture of paralysis, finger pointing, and lack of accountability and ownership. Middle managers’ main job is to keep their employees from knowing about the full chaos at the executive level. Most experienced and successful employees have departed or are looking for the exits. Siloed departments create misalignment between product development, sales, implementation services, support, marketing, and administration. There is a general lack of transparency in company performance and metrics including client and employee retention. Unrealistic goals are set for sales, and targets move throughout the year. Opaque and impossible company goals are set that affect company bonuses. Company bonuses have not been paid in years. The company is dependent on Blackbaud and Blackbaud’s clients for survival, a precarious position at best. Business outlook negative. The company will need to be sold or downsize to avoid a dumpster fire flameout.

Pros

Cool office Flexible Work from home

Cons

Management and leadership lack any real vision. Executive leadership is incompetent and sets terrible precedent throughout company. Zero company culture. Negative attitude and heavy politics throughout departments. Unrealistic quota expectations without any support from management. Under paid with no potential for upward mobility.

Pros

Great office Great mission (on paper)

Cons

Terrible leadership, primarily on the part of a callous COO (Irfan) and an absent CEO (Dan). You generally only see or hear about Dan a couple times per year as he's completely missing from Slack and only engages with employees at large gatherings. Irfan runs most of the company (HR, Finance, Marketing, CX), and does so very poorly. Every conversation with him feels like you're re-interviewing for your job with the possibility of not having one after – every question a trap, every statement an accusation, and every assumption one of laziness/incompetence/worst intentions. He regularly berates with he-said-she-said micromanagement, and ignores recommendations for higher-impact priorities in areas where you have more experience than he does; any work that doesn’t originate from him is treated (and spoken about) as a waste of time. He actively creates a blame-first environment with more effort spent on pointing fingers than fixing problems, where he requires a sense of white-knuckle control over all minutia of each team. No trust in the competence of his people, no belief in good intentions, and no empowerment to grow. He has cultivated an incredibly political environment that actively makes employees into worse versions of themselves everyday. Under Irfan, you're told directly that you have no say in setting your own priorities, and your opinions across any subject are unwelcome. The effect of this is a feeling of constant priorities-on-a-whim ambushes from management, which results in many half-finished projects, incomplete processes, departmental silos, and unnecessary stress. The company has a great mission on paper, to help nonprofits achieve their missions. Except Omatic has absolutely no conviction around their own mission, never talks about it, never thinks about it. They deliberately work to take no sides and stand for nothing, such that they're happy taking clients of any type, even those actively harming the world and other Omatic clients. If you're interested in Omatic because of their stated mission, save yourself the heartbreak.
