Pros

Projects are challenging and interesting. Location is decent.

Cons

Little/no training for complex modeling tools other than whatever you can learn yourself. Manager promises customers unattainable results - doesn't understand limitations of tools nor listens to expert advice. Bad attitude towards employees - results in 50%+ annual turnover. Compensation as little as possible - benefits nonexistent. No regard for employee's personal life or needs outside of the company. Publicly belittles employees to others.

As it was mentioned in the above “review” our projects at Openso are indeed challenging and interesting. The employees are expected to utilize their knowledge and training attained throughout their college years and prior work engagements to complete the projects. Our policy at Openso is to assign a mentor to each new engineer as a mentor and trainer through the projects “on the job training”. The new employee is not even held responsible for the correct and proper applications of engineering discipline in the first few projects. It would be the responsibility of the mentor/checker to make certain that the new employee is utilizing a correct approach and concept towards completing the project. The management is fully aware of the limitation of the tools used. Majority of the projects that Openso has at any given time contain some challenging aspects and indeed some are difficult for an average engineer that is exactly what sets Openso apart from other engineering companies that do assembly line engineering. There are always cases in any company that some employees misrepresent their character and their qualifications in their resume and in the interview process and because of that when it comes to performance on the job they can not simply perform and therefore not be able to meet the expectations. This in turn affects the project deadlines and budget overruns. The lack of knowledge and performance of the new employee in a repetition process will certainly cause frustration for both management and the new employee alike. To prevent this from happening, Openso is taking initiative to improve the interview and hiring process to find qualified candidates. As mentioned before Optimum Engineering Solutions, Inc. is a company that does cutting edge technology projects that are mostly very challenging and at the same time interesting. Some employees might not be comfortable with the level of difficulty of the projects and might decide to leave for that reason.

A terrible, terrible, terrible company to work for

Pros

Big variety of projects you can work on.

Cons

The variety of projects you work on is huge. So many projects are a first for this company. They mislead their clients about their experience in certain industries as well as whether the work is being done properly or with care. The only thing the owner cares about is money. He is also a micro-manager. He doesn't listen to any of his employees about whether a project might be too big or too difficult to complete in the required amount of time. He also does not like the idea of training new graduates how to do anything. If you don't know everything on day 1, you will be berated, humiliated, disparaged, threatened with termination, etc. I cannot emphasize how much the owner cares about money over due diligence with engineering analysis. It is revolting. He cares even less about his own employees. I am not the only person to experience this. The turnover at this company is something like 50%/year which is unheard of anywhere else I've worked. The owner didn't understand why I chose to leave and pleaded with me to stay and take on the next project. One of the scary things about the owner is that he can be the nicest guy when he wants to be, but he can instantly transform into a screaming monster in an instant. Like other reviews have said, the number of hours you're expected to work is insane. Forget about ever getting overtime pay too. What a cesspool.

Pros

The office is nice and the Edwardsville area is a good location. Other engineers were very smart and helped each other learn the tools and the industry knowledge.

Cons

Owner promises things he cannot deliver and treats "underperforming" employees very harshly. Pay was well below average. Working beyond the standard 8-5 was expected with no overtime / comp time. No chance to advance, despite the very high turnover. I saw nine employees leave during my time there, and the entire company only had maybe ten employees at most; it was a revolving door.
