Pros

Great engineers and opportunities to work on new things The team is great. I have lots of great friends amongst my colleagues. The culture is good and respects boundaries and work-life balance. In general, the company tries to do the right thing by its employees. Previously I gave a quite scathing review of the company, notably its CEO. I think we are now a company on the mend, the strategy is starting to make sense and the CEO is more capable than I originally gave him credit for.

Cons

Some middle management on the Norwegian side is very poor. We should demand a higher standard. Middle management sometimes gets excited about vanity projects that go nowhere, and often are not receptive to concerns from engineers. Technical debt is very high in some products (although teams are given the space and independence to improve this, which is good)

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. We appreciate your honesty regarding your experience with middle management. We are working through re-alignment and refocusing our employees and leaders on what is priority vs what is not priority to execute on. We do appreciate your feedback and welcome any other suggestions you may have.

Pros

• Good people - there’s a lot of talented and fun people who are good to work with. • Decent benefits - flexible work hours, work from home opportunities, private healthcare. • Travel and training - for most of my time there the company provided good opportunities to travel abroad and within the UK for conferences, or to visit the Oslo office. Not sure how that stands now with money being tighter. • Engineering - some brilliant engineers there, I learnt a lot in my time there about development. A strong focus on testing.

Cons

• Layoffs - 40% of staff were laid off last year to satisfy the board and be profitable by Q1 2023. This was done in several rounds with management promising each time would be the last. The December redundancies were announced by management with seemingly no actual plan as to who/what to cut, leading to 3 stressful weeks of uncertainty and no transparency culminating with bizarre decisions cutting key people from high-revenue teams. • Strategy - some teams are incredibly stressed and overworked from redundancies. “Doing less” is touted around but never seems to happen leading to a pattern of more work being done by less people. • Management - upper management is often quite detached from the day-to-day happenings. Despite an apparent interest in employee concerns (frequent surveys, Q&As during all hands, CEO/CTO in-person visits to offices) nothing seemed to materialise or change from these. We were encouraged to ask difficult questions and feel heard, but only received politician non-answers in response. • “Flat” structure - seems good on paper but is a double-edged sword. Engineers have a lot of autonomy and are told to “do what feels right” but receive little direction to what is commercially useful. It also leads to a lack of official accountability as everything is everyone’s responsibility and companies need a guiding hand to steer things. • Progression - tying on from the previous point, the promise of equality of opportunity and titles is meaningless as an informal hierarchy has formed, all the more difficult to navigate and understand. The CTO is rather political and cliquey and certain people continually get opportunities at the expense of everyone else. There's a repeated line in engineering that people have the "freedom" to move around projects and do what interests them, but new projects are withheld from being publicised and instead fed to specific people via back-channels and DMs.

Thank you for providing feedback. We know that this past year and Q1 of 2023 has been hard on our people. We take every review seriously and take each of them to heart. It is super important for us to rebuild the trust within our organization and within leadership going forward. It is extremely important for us now to work together as one team and figure out new ways to work better together. We hope that we will gain the trust back in the organization as you see the results coming in.

Pros

- Great coworkers - Interesting work even if there’s a lot of it right now. - Flexible with time off

Cons

Senior leadership aren’t transparent in their decision making. Unclear mixed messages in their communications. They don’t listen to the people actually doing the work and constantly give excuses as opposed to solutions. This has been a worrying trend since the change of CEO. Huge amounts of layoffs in the last year, but the workload hasn’t scaled accordingly. Some teams have been cut to breaking point.

We appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. Glad to hear that you enjoy the people you work with, our flexible time off, and the work you do. Colleagues, culture, and the daily tasks in your job are the most important things in job satisfaction. Transparency and communication is something that we are working really hard to fix in 2023. You are right, trust is earned and we are acutely aware that 2022 was rough and that some employees are still struggling with all the changes. Please reach out to your local HR Director if you have any other feedback or concerns to share. We want to make sure 2023 is a positive year.
