I worked at Real Programming 4 Kids for 2 years and 6 months and had a very positive experience overall. One of the biggest highlights was working with Elliott, the President. He is extremely supportive, approachable, and always willing to share knowledge. I learned a lot from him, especially about business, sales, customer relationships, and problem-solving. He gives employees opportunities to take ownership and develop skills beyond their role.
The environment encourages growth and learning, and I was trusted with meaningful responsibilities across different areas. The team culture was positive and collaborative, and it felt good contributing to something that helps students learn and grow. Overall, it was a place where I gained valuable professional experience and developed skills I’ll carry forward in my career.
Cons
Because the team can be lean at times, employees may take on multiple responsibilities and busy periods can be demanding. However, for me this also became a good opportunity to learn and gain broader experience.
Working at RP4K was a truly transformative experience that profoundly shaped my professional journey. The intensive training in multiple programming languages (Visual Basic, Java, C#, C++, Scratch, OpenGL) cultivated an incredible adaptability and fluency that has been invaluable throughout my academic and development career. I directly attribute my Assistant Professor position at a university to the rich teaching and technical experience gained at RP4K. The hands-on pedagogical philosophy effectively engages diverse learners, fostering crucial problem-solving skills in young students. The vibrant and inspiring energy of my fellow instructors, coupled with the brilliance of the students, made every day rewarding. Finally, the leadership of Elliot was genuinely inspiring; they were true role models.
Cons
While overwhelmingly positive, the role was demanding, requiring rapid adaptation to switch between and quickly learn various programming languages. This pace, however, ultimately forged resilience and an exceptional capacity for learning new technologies on the fly, which became a significant asset in my graduate studies and beyond.
