On the cusp of greatness with some introspection

Pros

You'll probably never meet a nicer, smarter, more engaged group of employees in your life. They care about their clients (and each other) and give it their all on every project. Plus, it's one of the best paying digital design firms in the area.

Cons

Upper-management can be oblivious/slow to respond to the frustration and confusion inflicted on employees by incompetent mid-managers.

Core cultural issues impair what could be a great design consultancy

Pros

You will learn a lot about experience design, and your process will become more rigorous. The team cohesion is strongest at the practitioner level. You will work with smart, humble people.

Cons

Sr. leadership's expectations aren't always clearly set. There are moving targets for design process and design quality. When those standards or expectations aren't met, morale and work/life balance go downhill very quickly. Unfortunately, standards and expectations are challenging to meet when they're not clear.

Frustrating

Pros

Great lower-level people to work with. The co-workers are very friendly, easy to get a long with, and extremely knowledgable in their field of expertise. The owner occasionally buys beer for the fridge and it's always stocked with free soda and drinks. He has good catering brought in for most events.

Cons

Often tense office environment when it comes to project work. High level of micro-management on most projects. While startup-like, it has 'rules' that are that of an older, established company. Things such as being in the office by 9am. No established growth structure, such as goals to achieve a new position. No employee incite to company financials, which leads to employees feeling that they do not have a stake in the company's success or failure.
