Pros

This has been my favourite startup so far. It's full of smart, quirky folks who take their work seriously but don’t take themselves too seriously. You can drop the "corporate mode" and just be yourself. It’s a great place for people who prefer flexible hours and the rush of getting stuff done, so it depends on what kind of environment you thrive in. They also do a decent job of connecting people since it's fully remote. In general, everyone seems to get along and there's still a "small team feel" with plenty of banter on Slack and local meetups. The team is also mindful of your timezone and they're surprisingly accommodating about time off. You can tell your team you’re taking a sick day or need a few hours for an errand, or request personal days just to recharge. Plus, there’s unlimited PTO. Basically, you work hard—but you can vacation hard too. As for leadership, I won’t pretend to know the inner workings, but I appreciate that the CEO will straight-up tell us the good, the bad, and the ugly during the All Hands. He’s also super humble and knows his stuff. You can really tell the difference when a tech company is led by an actual engineer vs. a business bro. My opinion of him as a leader is neutral since I don't interact with him often. As a person, even new hires will tell you he's kinder and more approachable than most CEOs. As for management, there are the usual grumbles about some micromanaging and last-minute asks. I can only speak for the marketing team, but our VP is pretty mindful of his leadership style and takes our feedback seriously. He gives credit where credit is due, and while he does push us to perform, he also keeps a close eye on the team (to the point where he'll tell me to log off if he catches me on Slack after hours) and often reminds us to tell him if we need help. Tbh, I've never been on a marketing team as tight-knit and playful as this one. Of course, the dynamic is different in every team and I'm sure everyone has their own quibbles. Overall, Redpanda is a one-of-a-kind startup with plenty of room to grow (and plenty of funding to do so). If, like me, you prefer brain-stimulating work and interesting people over a rigid corporate environment, you won't be disappointed here.

Cons

Typical growing pains and the usual workplace woes. Honestly, none of the challenges here are unique. (If you find a job that has no stress or finicky managers, please tell the world.) Just know that this isn’t a 9 to 5 office job. It’s a startup and that comes with certain trade-offs. There are calm periods and then there are crunch times. There are days when you can knock off when you're done and there are days when you stay up late to push out a last-minute request. You have your regular duties, quarterly goals, and whatever pops up on Slack. Can it get stressful? Certainly. Would I exchange it for a monotone 9 to 5 where you do the exact same thing in an endless loop? Nope.

High potential, fast paced, and dynamic

Pros

Redpanda is a fun place to work, but it depends on your definition of fun. Successful startup companies move at an incredible pace, it comes with the territory, and Redpanda is no different. As long as your up for the challenge, strap in and enjoy the ride. The technology is advanced, interesting to work with, and has huge potential. It's still maturing and has some kinks to iron out, but the engineering team here is top notch and improvements and new features are being delivered thick and fast. Redpanda has a good company culture and values, which flow down from the very top. "Be a good human" is a core value and the vast majority of humans here are exceptional and a pleasure to work with. I personally like the fully-remote culture, but there are times when you can feel a little isolated, so you have to be independent and comfortable working remotely all the time.

Cons

A while ago I would've given at least 4 in my review, but recent times have been more challenging. Redpanda is transitioning out of the early startup phase, and into the growth phase. More investment (series C) and bigger targets result in more pressure, and whilst I haven't felt this on a personal level, I can see it affecting other areas of the business. The company is "running hot" and its starting to affect peoples mood. Attrition has increased and there are some gaps in multiple key roles (e.g. VP of Product), which is leaving teams exposed and without direction. Other leaders have stepped in and are doing a good job, but this is only masking the problem. I know that filling these roles is a priority, so I'm not overly concerned, but good leaders are hard to find. At the end of the day, this is startup life, and you have to be prepared for a little bit of a rollercoaster. I disagree with some of the negative reviews about Redpanda. I've never been pressured to work late or at weekends. Yes, I've done it, but always on my terms, and usually when I'm working on something interesting.

Great company, great opportunity

Pros

There's lots of opportunity to take initiative, and define your own path. The people are great, helpful, supportive, especially as the company is growing they have retained a good culture. Even throughout some of the tougher changes as we grow, the leadership is good at identifying what's important, and making decisions that ultimately benefit the trajectory of the company. That has definitely contributed to me sticking around. Long term vision for the company looks good too. I've worked in several areas since being part of the company. I've learnt a lot, they have helped me grow as both an IC and growing into a manager position.

Cons

Based on previous experience it's the usual growing pains of a startup and scaling up, nothing out of the ordinary. Some long days. It's not for the faint-hearted (could be considered a pro or a con). You need to be able to identify problems, bring solutions to the table, and work to make it happen. For me personally this is great, I can help contribute to how things are being built, and how the processes work. I can see if you need guard rails you may struggle a little.
