Cool product, but company is mismanaged

Pros

There are some really awesome and talented people at the company, and the product itself is good.

Cons

Management refused to make the changes that the entire company agreed would make the app worth buying. The constant decision to employ cheap and quick "hacks" over investing time and effort into making a quality product was constantly biting us in the butt. Communication from management was not what employees needed it to be. There was an inability for me to grow and level up that kept me stuck in the job for longer than I wanted.

Thank you for giving us this opportunity to listen. With feedback from our employees, we’ve made several changes in the past year to address some of the issues you’ve described. We’ve realigned our marketing and content teams to make brand and voice ownership more concrete, continued to invest in product talent through difficult economic times, and we’ve greatly increased our communication frequency with tools like 15five and a regular Town Hall format that allows for anonymous Q and A and the utmost transparency. We care deeply about our employees and I’m sorry you feel we hacked together certain parts of our product. As a small company, we make some of those hard decisions that can sometimes feel like we’re driving the car while still building it; that’s how we innovate and identify what works best for our customers.

There is nothing stable except the poor leadership

Pros

Outside of leadership, there are good people working for the company.

Cons

Leadership protects itself not the employees when times get tough. No real chance to grow or advance. Not an idea place for creative people to thrive. Company is focused on doing a lot for as cheap as possible.

One of our core values is ‘Building Trust Through Transparency’ so I appreciate your feedback and encourage you to share it with your manager, HR, in 15Five or one of our sli.do Q and A’s. We don’t have just good people working here, we have great people and do everything in our power to protect and grow them. Yes, we've made some recent changes to focus on our core business and mission; that did, unfortunately, mean investing more in product roles, eliminating a handful of roles, and temporarily furloughing some roles where we hope the economic effects are temporary. Stability is a challenging quality for a travel startup in a global pandemic; we hoped that by not reducing your salary and having weekly all-team town-hall meetings we could create as much personal stability and transparency for our team as possible.

Chaotic, opaque, and mismanaged.

Pros

I worked with some of the most passionate, creative, and hardworking people in my career. Flexible schedule and unlimited vacation time — not sure how long that will last.

Cons

Creatives will not be able to thrive in this environment that values cheap, quick turn-around with little to no thought behind it. There are no real opportunities for advancement or professional development and employees are often shuffled between managers. The leadership is poor, inexperienced, biased, and self-motivated.

Thank you for recognizing that we have a phenomenal team of people working here. Everyone's contributions are meaningful. As a startup travel technology company, it can feel like trying to fly a plane while we’re still building it and while that’s not for everyone, this is what we do; it can feel chaotic at times but can also be rewarding to see the impact of your personal contributions so quickly. Our remote-work and unlimited vacation policies are generous and a core part of our cultural difference. Upward mobility is difficult in a small company, but we have numerous examples in the past year alone -- so while I recognize it’s not available for every role, we take pride in promoting our internal talent.
