Where do I start, Ian Narev has ruined the culture of this organisation. What took the Basset brothers and the long term SEEK employees years to cultivate and be super proud of, Narev has obliterated and left standing a very insincere, dishonest robotic machine that lacks the values, behaviours and care that make SEEK a great place to work.
When Narev took the top job, he emulated Andrew's style.. ditching the CBA suits and copying the jeans and t-shirt of AB and other Tech leaders.. that's where the comparison between AB and Narev ends. All throughout the covid times, Andrew and the execs made a point that employees would keep their jobs and customers would keep their businesses offering them massive financial relief when it was really needed. We dont do redundancies was a statement that was made time and time again and when Narev took over, he too continued to spout at townhalls we don't do mass redundancies, we will not do that here at SEEK. This was as sincere as Scombo at the bush fires.. as while he was saying this to staff in townhalls across APAC, redundancies were taking place in pockets of teams across the organisation, quietly hushed up.. only to come out weeks later when you tried to contact someone and they no longer worked at SEEK. Time and time again it would happen and in townhalls staff were told by Narev and the wicked witch of the east Kathy that "we don't do redundancies, a small number of roles were unfortunately not required those people have been offered alternative roles". What is apparent, is through these redudnacies, the number of tenured staff who are leaving the business far out ways the newer members, in doing this they continue to lose those team members who embody the SEEK values of "doing the thinking upfront" of "doing what is right, not what is popular of easy" and as such they are left with teams that don't collaborate on problems, that are out for themselves, that spend more time on politics than focusing on the customer problem. Its very sad to see what a few years of obliterating the culture has done to the foundations of the culture. Narevs time is due to come to an end and will the culture change with the changing of a guard, sadly i think it has been too far destroyed. There was a time when I would be jumping out of bed to get to work, where I was excited to return after annual leave, that culture is long gone, it was a very special time in the orignsation and directly contributed to the sucess of the business, its very sad to see it being minimised and disregarded replaced with rehearsed words, coroporate jargon, scripted care factor.
Joining SEEK today, you will be dazzled by the building, by the Thursday drinks and the fixathons.. but once you scratch that surface, look for coaching or career growth.. you will be met with the "stay in your lane" response, productivity is number 1 and the opportunities of yesterday are long gone.
