Pros

There are some really great people here with big, kind hearts. Great ideals and aspirational values.

Cons

I, like many of the folks here, was drawn to the defiantly virtuous ideals and mission statement espoused by this agency, "quit advertising, make work you're proud of with purpose, work with kind and generous people, love your life." I admire the agency's intention to set such a value-driven north star to guide them home, but this dream is not yet a reality. Here's what I and many others experienced: exclusion, stonewalling and gaslighting, double standards, public disrespect and shaming, unfair and unrealistic expectations on output without organizational or structural support, the high value placed on a lack of work-life balance, and if you're a BIPOC, the dismissal of your ideas which are then celebrated when uttered or implemented by someone who's not a minority. A strong will to perform emotional labor coupled with the desire to abide by emotional display rules is required to overcome the symptoms of burnout and cognitive dissonance. There is potential for a lot of good here, and I am thankful for the opportunity to have grown my resilience and interpersonal skills. Unfortunately, my health, self-confidence, and well-being suffered as a result of having worked here.

Pros

The Hooligan Castaways are a great support network and will do what they can to help one another out.

Cons

Look at the response to the “Not psychologically safe” review and tell me you feel comfortable with this company running crisis comms. If you value transparency from your management team, this is not the place you want to work. I’ve seen them dangle the carrot of raises and promotions in front of multiple people, only to cruelly deny them when you meet the goals outlined by your direct supervisor. The “flat management” style is really 5 favorites of the founders, with a revolving door of young talent they can exploit by pumping out maximum hours for little money. They quickly elevate inexperienced employees to positions of managing people, even when that person has little-to-no aptitude in doing so. Those in management positions WILL insulate you from the founders so they can claim your success as their own to fortify their positions. If you need an entry-level job, and don’t mind working tons of extra hours for little to no recognition until you have something solid on your resume and inevitably be paid your worth by another agency, then you are in the right place. The “hooligan” culture they will sell you is a lie. The culture is built on value statements that the company’s leadership has no desire to back up with appropriate or direct actions. Lots of talk, very little walk. But, surveys are fun! Last year the vast majority of Black employees left over a 2-3 month period. That wasn’t an accident. Culture doesn’t turn on a dime, it’s a shipping freighter that requires small changes over a long time in order to change direction. I can’t imagine much has changed since my ouster. Perhaps the culture revolving so much around alcohol isn’t the safest or most inclusive way to operate. They are hyper-reactive and pivot like crazy to fix problems that they could solve by investing in their employees and their careers.

Pros

SRW is unlike any other ad agency I've worked at. This is a place where I've always felt that me as a person/human being is more important than me as an employee. At SRW, if you are a go-getter, problem solver, and don't need to be told what to do every single day, you will succeed and be rewarded. The people here are talented, diverse, and just genuinely good human beings. We do such a wide variety of work for clients who are actually trying do to good in the world, which makes the work we do that much more rewarding.

Cons

Not a con of SRW in particular, but with any business that is growing, it will present challenges. Not every single process, tool, structure, etc. at SRW is, or will be, "perfect". But I do believe leadership is doing everything right in terms of managing these challenges and addressing them head-on.
