Pros

The company has a real mission helping to make the world a safer place. Strong technology and some great products. Great people with real commitment to the company in junior and middle management

Cons

Senior management has lost touch with the company. More and more initiatives but nothing ever really changes. They keep shouting at us to do better but never tell us how. The old GM&ER guys are getting rid of the S&I guys and losing a lot of experience in the process. They've tried bringing some new people in but the ones that seem to be any good leave when they realise what they are up against; the worst ones just play games. Development and advancement have gone out of the window - pay rises have been tiny. Our competitors seem to be doing much better than we are at the moment with some really big wins.

Pros

Smiths Detection is a division of Smiths Group, which is a large industrial. At least there's the opportunity to transfer out of the poorly led Division into a more competently managed one. There were some good people there, sadly most of whom were forced out by management in the name of cost cutting.

Cons

Relentless focus on cost cutting at the expense of actually getting anything productive done. Antiquated systems and processes (most of which feel pre 2000) and a refusal to invest time and money in bringing them into the 21st century. Unpleasant head office working environment where the most senior sit in a luxury office in central London while the junior teams are in an industrial estate in Hemel Hempstead. Poor leadership and management of the Division has driven away talented staff. Those that remain tend to be overworked or promoted beyond their ability - a problem that gets worse the more senior you go in the Division.

Pros

Future tech run by others outside of this site is better

Cons

full of bullies and people who have been in the industry for too long and have not kept there skills up to date. Continues improvement showed promise but was implemented by idiots and has shown little benefit that isn't from the massaging of numbers. Engineering department is run by people who did phd in science years ago and haven't done much else since - hint they definitely don't know about engineering and it is bloody shocking . This is a place where engineering goes to die, even working in starts ups i have not seen such a level of staff turnover due to poor management and treatment. 1 to 10 manager staff ratio, it feels like 10-1 but the mangers they have can't cope so they have to bring in silly rules rather than refreshing the workforce. project mangers are the most incompetent that i have ever had the displeasure of working with, massive slips hidden, no idea of knock on effects, no idea how to plan and they always duck and cover. way to much interference from the vast quantities of VPs and other warm bodies that are employed stateside, I have no idea what they all do (head of toxic culture 1-10 if i had to guess). The only reason people stay here is because by the time you have been here for 2-3 years your skills will have fallen behind your pears in the industry and people get trapped. to be clear since i started most of the peole that started after me have left. It is really really bad.
