Unsympathetic Leadership: Redundancies and Employee Disregard

Pros

The team I worked with were great

Cons

The founders display a complete lack of sympathy for their staff. In July, they laid off 19 employees, just one person shy of the collective redundancy threshold of 20 within 90 days. This allowed them to circumvent any formal redundancy process, which they indeed sidestepped. Fast forward 100 days, and they made an additional 9 staff members redundant. It was evident that they had planned this course of action earlier in the year but deliberately avoided the formal procedure. One would think we could have seen the signs, but there was absolutely no communication between July and October, except for one WhatsApp message regarding positive investor meetings (not so positive if they made more people redundant). Town Hall meetings, where the entire company gathered to discuss the business's performance, were abandoned until a week after the further redundancies were executed. A mere five days after being informed of the layoffs, we were still expected to report to the office on mandatory Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This wouldn't have been an issue if not for two critical factors. Firstly, we were left without any guidance on what tasks to focus on. The truly deplorable aspect was being instructed to prioritize office attendance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays over scheduling job interviews. Their lack of empathy for our situation was glaring; we were told to place the company that had discarded us ahead of securing new employment. All for what? To sit idly in the office, with no assigned tasks, appearing miserable while twiddling our thumbs?

Narcissistic Co-Founders

Pros

The team is incredibly amazing.

Cons

Spring is a game to the co-founders, staff are not valued or respected. Staff are belittled in front of peers and toxic company traits are rife. Team members are rewarded for working weekends / evenings and ‘jokes’ are made about staff not keeping their jobs if they don’t choose to conform. Company communication is done via WhatsApp in the form of a group message and the co-founders message regularly outside of working hours. If the co-founders don’t like a particular person they use obvious tactics to push them out of the business before moving on to the next person. In the same way they push people out, they equally have their favourites who can’t put a foot wrong. The co-founders lack transparency and recently fired 19 people out of the blue, one person below the collective redundancy threshold of 20, no formal process had to be followed and therefore wasn’t. The ‘safe staff’ were treated to company drinks two days after 19 people were left without a job. Staff were given the option to work their notice period or take less pay to leave early.

Pros

Work colleagues and the team are lovely.

Cons

The management style is a masterclass in passive-aggressiveness, with the manager blindly following higher-ups, leaving the team hanging high and dry. The co-founders? Well, they've elevated themselves to a realm of unwarranted superiority, playing favourites like it's their day job. Oh, and meet the HR department, a one-person show dedicated to singing praises for the founders rather than giving any actual support. In the realm of organisation, chaos reigns supreme. Unrealistic workloads are thrown around like confetti, creating an environment that thrives on stress and toxicity. Growth? Don't hold your breath – there's no roadmap here. Promises of promotions and pay raises? They're more like a ghost story told around the company campfire, leaving you stranded in a never-ending loop of waiting and disappointment. This isn't about tearing the company down; it's about shedding light on the reality beneath the shiny exterior. Consider this a brutally honest reality check before diving headfirst into a world where chaos is the norm and promises fade like whispers in the wind.
