Pros

Good product and some good people

Cons

“Was a great place — until it wasn’t” I worked at Stake for many years. For most of that time, it was genuinely a good company. The people were kind, the culture was collaborative, and while there was some pressure from the product side, and the engineering culture and pay were nothing special, it was a solid place to work overall. Everything changed when a new CTO joined — someone already well-known in the industry for bullying and inappropriate behavior and was fired because of that from his previous company. He brought in an aggressive “high-performance culture” modeled after Optiver, and it completely destroyed the company from the inside. Engineers started getting hired just to be fired. People began attacking each other to protect their own positions. It became one of the most toxic environments I’ve ever experienced. What I still don’t understand is why anyone would tolerate this kind of culture for pay that’s at or below market average. If you’re going to demand Meta-level intensity, at least match Meta-level compensation. Would not recommend — unless you have no other options or genuinely enjoy a cutthroat, backstabbing environment

We appreciate the many years you spent with Stake and are glad to hear there were aspects of your experience you valued. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your experience changed towards the end of your time with us. We recognise that periods of change, particularly with new leadership, can have a significant impact on teams, and it’s clear from your feedback that this transition did not feel positive in your case. Over the past period, we have intentionally raised performance expectations across the business, alongside a focus on clearer goals, accountability, and support. While this direction is important for our growth, we acknowledge that we have not always executed these changes as well as we should, and we are actively working to improve how we support our people through them. We take concerns around behaviour and culture very seriously. We have zero tolerance for bullying or toxic conduct, and we continue to invest in better feedback channels, leadership accountability, and people processes to ensure issues are identified and addressed. We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective, and we wish you all the best in your next chapter.

Pros

- A lot of the mid-junior levels are really nice people and try hard. - Nice office with snacks and a coffee machine - CEO seems genuine.

Cons

- Incredibly male dominated culture that's very dismissive towards women. - A few C-Suite and senior management (especially in tech, product and marketing) are incredibly cliquey and unpleasant people. - Alcohol-focused culture. If you're not a drinker, expect to be cut out. - Incredibly micromanaging culture that can verge on bullying. - Very high turnover: a lot of people don't pass probation or quickly leave after a couple of months, often with no warning. - People who've been there for a long time seem to get a free pass no matter what. - Claim to be doing good for people's finances but in reality design a product that encourages spending to boost Stake's fees.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience at Stake did not reflect the kind of environment we aim to create. We recognise the concerns you’ve raised around inclusion, leadership behaviour, and team culture. Creating a workplace where everyone feels respected and supported, regardless of gender or background, is a priority for us, and it’s clear from your feedback that we have more work to do in this area. We also acknowledge that the experience people have with their managers can significantly shape their time at Stake. As we’ve grown, we’ve introduced more first time managers, and we are continuing to invest in training, feedback, and accountability to ensure they are setting the right standards and supporting their teams effectively. In terms of culture and social environment, we want our workplace to feel inclusive to everyone. While experiences can vary across teams and individuals, we are continuing to evolve how we approach team events and day to day culture to ensure people feel comfortable and included. We take concerns around behaviour, fairness, and respect seriously, and we are committed to improving in these areas. We appreciate you sharing your perspective and wish you all the best moving forward.
