Pros

Working as a Senior Software Engineer at State Affairs has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s a fast-growing startup where engineers truly grow alongside the company, taking on meaningful responsibility and having real ownership over critical systems. With a small, high-impact engineering team, we’re not only involved in deciding what to build, but also empowered to design how it’s built, from architecture to execution. it’s an environment where motivated engineers can learn quickly, influence product direction, and see the direct impact of their work.

Cons

State Affairs is a fast-growing startup with a small, highly trusted engineering team, which means engineers take on a wide range of responsibilities and have significant ownership over both product and technical decisions. The pace is fast and the problems are complex, often requiring deep focus and long hours, but that intensity translates into rapid learning and accelerated career growth. Because the team is lean, engineers are exposed to many parts of the system and regularly work across disciplines, which builds strong end-to-end expertise. Overall, it’s an excellent environment for engineers who thrive on responsibility, autonomy, and building systems that matter.

Thank you for the thoughtful review. We’re really glad to hear that the ownership, autonomy, and ability to influence both architecture and product direction have made this a rewarding experience for you. Your perspective on the pace and responsibility reflects the trust we place in our teams, and we appreciate how clearly you framed both the challenges and the growth that comes with them. We’re especially grateful for the advice as feedback like this helps guide those decisions. Thanks for your impact on the team and for taking the time to share such a review.

Pros

State Affairs is one of the best places I’ve worked for learning and growth. There’s a strong culture of trust and transparency, and leadership does a great job communicating priorities and context. Management is supportive and thoughtful, and the engineering culture encourages ownership, high standards, and continuous improvement.

Cons

The bar is high and expectations are strong, which can sometimes mean long hours depending on deadlines and priorities.

Thank you for the kind and thoughtful feedback. We’re really glad to hear that the culture of trust, transparency, and clear communication has supported your learning and growth, and that the engineering standards and sense of ownership resonate with you. We also appreciate the honest note on expectations and workload. Maintaining high standards while being mindful of sustainability is something we continue to work on. Your advice to keep investing in culture and transparency as we grow is well taken. Thanks for being part of the team and for sharing your perspective.

Pros

Literally none aside from remote work (which they are ending) and your coworkers being solid people

Cons

Oh boy where to start: Echoing the title, avoid State Affairs at all cost unless you like horrid pay, unobtainable goals, no respect for work life balance, and abysmal, unorganized, micromanaging direct leadership. -Goals completely unobtainable (30 discovery meetings a month) to avoid paying an actual wage and commission (52k base 75-80 OTE which you will never see), they will say it is possible “because you can hit them cross channel between email, LinkedIn, and cold calling” which literally any BDR position worth their salt will do at any company with reasonable goals. -Out of touch and Machiavellian management, that will threaten your job security on your second week if you don’t produce results right after lackluster training with no ramp period. THEN will fire you after one month (Literally lasted a month and after not being able to work 4 days due to walking pneumonia, was let go despite offering to forego my upcoming vacation to make up lost time) -Care more about pointless activity than producing results, ver betum leadership had stated this and will expect hundreds of calls a day AND hawkishly micromanage ON THE HOUR, expecting you to stay late to meet their pie in the sky arbitrary expectations. All in all the worst professional experience I’ve ever had or heard of, god help the good people still suffering there.

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your experience was so negative and did not meet expectations. That’s not the outcome we want for anyone who joins the company. We aim to be transparent about role expectations, compensation structure, and performance standards, especially in a fast-paced startup environment, but it’s clear from your review that you felt unsupported and unfairly treated during your time here. We take concerns around onboarding, management approach, workload expectations, and how health-related situations are handled very seriously, and feedback like this prompts internal reflection and review. While we may not agree with every characterization, we do appreciate you calling out specific issues, particularly around training and ramp periods. Those are areas we continue to evaluate and improve as we grow. We wish you the best in your next role and hope you find an environment that better aligns with what you’re looking for.
