Management is a huge issue here.

Pros

What was once a wonderful supportive environment has turned to a dictatorship. Recently the company has made some significant changes without properly training the team.

Cons

I would steer clear of working here until there is a change in management. There’s no feedback loop, and many promises that are made to employees are not kept. They’ve taken away all of the cultural pieces, and replaced them with cruel public call outs. The upper management team will not hesitate to throw you under the bus to make themselves appear better. Teammates are unjustly fired with little explanation making everyone fear their position in the company.

Hi there - that is excellent advice. What you articulate has been a big part of my mission since joining the management team a year ago--listen to our people about their first-hand experiences, speak not only to them, but with them, frequently and openly, and build the culture together. We're on the feedback journey! I also hear that you experienced a lack of training alongside the changes that had been made. That is a tough experience to have had. I'm pleased to say that our recently launched weekly training sessions have been well-received, along with other intentional Learning & Development efforts. Learning and the opportunity for continuous growth & development is a big passion of mine, and your review reinforces the importance of it, thank you. - Andrea (VP, People)

Pros

Really nice culture and amazing people to work with.

Cons

Unfortunately, management is so far removed from doing actual marketing and strategy that they don't have the slightest clue as to what clients actually need. So the sales team is constantly bringing in clients who are sold dreams of high ROAS and profitability and the employees have to take on the burden of these unrealistic expectations. When clients churn because of these expectations you will be blamed and likely fired. They also do not have quarterly performance reviews so there is no track or expectation of growth for you to follow.

Hello there - while we still have amazing people to work with, it sounds like much else has changed since your experience. Not to say we're perfect, but it is thanks to the open candid feedback from our employees and our clients that we've been on a continuous mission to make the agency a fantastic place to work. The management team includes practitioners and marketers with first-hand experience. Our sales calls and audits include strategists who will deliver the work, so they keep it real. :-) I can understand how the situation you described would feel challenging! What I feel most personally proud of is that we have implemented a robust performance review process in the past year since I joined the company. This includes career paths, competency frameworks, peer reviews, self-evaluations, SMART goals setting & tracing, and development conversations with one's manager. I recognize how deeply important this is to the employee experience, and am here so that we may, to borrow your words, "be better." :-) Thanks for reinforcing the value of what we're up to, I appreciate it! - Andrea (VP, People)

Negative Shift in Culture, Avoid

Pros

There is some occasional good team camaraderie and learning, some of the management cares.

Cons

So much neglected potential for an agency environment, recent negative shift in culture and management approach is most concerning (starting summer 2023). Hardly any leadership transparency, team collaboration, and not listening to the team compared with other agencies of this size. Inconsistent, detached CEO and new waves of layoffs without explanation. No 401(k) offered despite founders saying otherwise previously. No performance review given in 1.5+ years working there. No consistent career paths or change in comp despite performance. Disconnect between departments with different approaches, even if one client signs up for multiple services. Salespeople set unrealistic client expectations that team is then blamed for. Zero in-person events to help build team camaraderie. Not worth your time.

Your advice is spot-on and aligned to my people priorities; from your review it sounds like you have already left so would not unfortunately be around to experience the changes we have made over the past year. It sounds like you'd be pleased to hear that we now have career pathing, performance reviews, regular employee listening platforms and feedback loops. We also have folks in sales roles who are also strategists (hybrid roles) to ensure what we sell is completely in line with what we deliver. We also offer our full-time employees a 401(k) option. And this year our big focus has been on better integration so that our clients experience one cohesive team even when they come to us for multiple services. For those who need/expect lots of in-person events, this agency is probably NOT for you. That's not to say people never have the opportunity to get together (this past week, two team members attended a meta conference together. Recently we flew one of our strategists internationally to spend time with a client along with our CEO. So it can happen- but I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking this is a hybrid agency; we are fully remote). When I started at the agency a year ago, I met with everyone on the team 1to1 in my first month (and then decided to continue doing this practice) and I got SO much valuable feedback that has shaped my people strategy. We're on a journey! :-) Andrea (VP, People)
