      Frustrating life as DBA

      Pros

      Great hands on experience on various databases, I learned many essential skills in database tuning and linux/unix administration, friendly colleagues, good overtime pay.

      Cons

      It can be frustrating when you get called midnight and the issue is urgent. Worst case is you missed the call or didn't respond on time, then the issue gets escalated to your boss or the boss of your boss......

      Initial years are good if you choose to work like crazy (stay late till 9PM).. but things are bad after year 4th.

      Pros

      Exposure to many technical grow (as not enough technical competent engineers). Good initial pay.

      Cons

      Too many mid and low management positions vs. engineers (who do "dirty-work"). In many case, the promotion is based on who pleased the boss most and who stay (or show up as) late in working office. The promotion process is widely viewed unfair among employees.

      Pros

      I was an engineer with TECH quite some years ago before its merge into Micron. not sure about the current situation, but the then company was definitely a top rated one in the Singapore semicon industry with good culture and decent pay.

      Cons

      not that i can think of.
