Pros

The company dog was the about the only benefit of working at the company. Some of the clients are fun to work with and will let you take some design risks but most don't have a sense of design. Most menus are themed and the clients will let you know what the want.

Cons

While I worked at the company there were only two graphic designers at the company. We both had about 20 clients that we worked with. There is an expectation to design a complete menu within 4 hours while also being available to answer phones, complete favors for the boss and add backgrounds/reformat menus for the production team so they can quickly print menus. Also don't be surprised when you are asked to fold, coil-bind, or help with anything else that the production team needs in order to get their orders out in time. Let's just say the design aspect of the company is put on the back burner. There are a lot of unrealistic expectations that are set by people who do not understand design and if these expectations are not met there could be penalizations (in the form of write-ups). These write-ups can come out of no where with no explanations or warnings. Many of the write-ups that were given out could have been solved with a simple conversation but there is a HUGE lack of communication at the company. The only people who are allowed to talk to each other was the CEO and the manager, who would frequently rant about employees behind a closed door (except the graphic designer sit close enough to hear all of it). Moving up at the company or getting the ($0.25) raise is difficult if you are not on the manager's favorite list, if you aren't staying late, and if you have fewer than three write-ups. There is also a high turnover rate at the company so don't be surprised when people only stay for about a month.

Thank you for taking the time to provide a review of TerraSlate on Glassdoor. Regarding the 4 hour menu design timeframe, there has been a misunderstanding. As written in the Employee Handbook, the customer has paid for four hours of design work. If, based on the direction of the customer, the design is taking longer than 4 hours, the expectation is that we need to reach out to the customer to cover the additional design-time costs. One of our Core Values is teamwork. As a new, fast-growing company sometimes employees are asked to step into another role/responsibility area if there’s a temporary gap or work surge. This happens not just with design team members, but across the entire company. In fact, the members of our management teams pitch in as well. We value clear communication. To be certain each employee receives the same clear instruction, each employee reviews and signs the Employee Handbook on their first day. Our current policy as stated in the Employee Handbook is that an employee may receive a write-up for actions that directly contradict the Employee Handbook. Whereas, a warning is warranted when the action is not covered in the Employee Handbook. We believe these policies are reasonable and consistent with the market.

Pros

- Dog comes into the office

Cons

- Overbearing owner with no understanding of the jobs his employees do for him - Sexist and racist behavior on the regular -Owner uses the word ‘retarded’ to describe his own employees frequently - ILLEGALLY asked prospective employees about their mental health histories and wouldn’t hire based on possible depression, etc. - Owner talked crap about employees to manager regularly, within earshot of the entire design team - .25¢ raise every quarter if you were perfect during that time and weren’t written up for absolutely ridiculous accusations - Was called ‘unapproachable’ for keeping my eyes on my work and not always making eye contact when spoken to, owner requires a lot of rear-kissing and respect for someone with no respect for others whatsoever - Owner once refused the close the business during a bomb cyclone because he was on a beach and didn’t believe it was as bad as we were saying. Owner then closed the following day without notifying employees so everyone risked their lives to drive to work to find it closed. - Owner frequently goes on ‘working vacations’ to islands and beaches while making demands on the phone and e-mail to his employees - Years later I am still working through the trauma of working under Kyle Ewing. It has taken a very good boss to undo what Kyle has done to my confidence, psyche, and mental well-being. I wouldn’t recommend anyone work with Kyle ever again, especially after the sexual harassment allegations against him in recent years.
