I worked at The Field Museum full-time

    Pros

    Great CEO
    Important mission
Significant intellectual interest - it's really a small university, with a large academic staff, etc.
You get to participate in many activities (events, etc.).

    Cons

It is fairly bureaucratic. Decision-making is slow and cumbersome (academic model).
Salaries are low, budgets are tight.
Whenever you work for a not-for-profit, you need to be thoughtful about your career afterwards. As true here as any institution (but not more so, management is very fair).
    Difficult commute.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

I worked at The Field Museum part-time

    Pros

I was moved all around the museum as a student employee and was able to gain experience dealing with attendees in a variety of ways.

    Cons

There were no cons. I loved my time there.

    Pros

Great benefits and people. Opportunity to advance.

    Cons

Some areas are not open to new ideas. Unnecessarily stressful at times.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff ideas . Training for those moving into management rolls is needed across the institution.

I worked at The Field Museum full-time

    Pros

-The museum does amazing work (research, exhibitions, conservation, and collections)
-A rich history within the natural history world, as well as the city of Chicago
    -Brand recognition within non-profit/museum/tourism industries

    Cons

    -Slow moving
-Leadership favors loud voices and internal politics over strategy
-Each department/ area of the museum works in a silo (lack of unity/ strategy across museum-wide efforts)

-The Museum itself is a wonder to walk into every day

    Cons

The HR department is TERRIBLE. It's obvious that they do not care about employees.

    Advice to Management

Rethink your annual review process - no one takes them seriously.

    Pros

-Work with people who are very passionate about what they do
    -Great benefits
    -A lot of fun events
-Learn so much. You are invited to attend presentations and simply from talking to other people

    Cons

-A lot of jobs are subject to grants so you have very little job security
-Traffic in that area can be insane
-Having to deal with egos and hierarchy

    Advice to Management

Find a way to give your employees more job security, there has to be a way to make that work.

I worked at The Field Museum full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good people, good work.

    Cons

Department budgets vary. The rich departments get richer and the poor departments stay poor. Everyone works just as hard as everyone else. Some departments scramble to find ways to spend their budgets while others can't afford supplies.

    Advice to Management

Transparency is healthy. Make budget information available to all. Then figure out a way to distribute resources fairly.
