    Pros

-Work with people who are very passionate about what they do
    -Great benefits
    -A lot of fun events
-Learn so much. You are invited to attend presentations and simply from talking to other people

    Cons

-A lot of jobs are subject to grants so you have very little job security
-Traffic in that area can be insane
-Having to deal with egos and hierarchy

    Advice to Management

Find a way to give your employees more job security, there has to be a way to make that work.

    Pros

Very flexible schedule and access to the most amazing science and scientists in the world.

    Cons

Pay is awful and there is no structure to move up in the organization and get a pay raise.

    Advice to Management

Create structure to advance within the organization.

I worked at The Field Museum full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good people, good work.

    Cons

Department budgets vary. The rich departments get richer and the poor departments stay poor. Everyone works just as hard as everyone else. Some departments scramble to find ways to spend their budgets while others can't afford supplies.

    Advice to Management

Transparency is healthy. Make budget information available to all. Then figure out a way to distribute resources fairly.

I worked at The Field Museum full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people that work at the Field Museum are amazing. There's a great energy in the building and most people love what they do and keep things fun. The work is great and challenging and you're always working on something different. There is some upward mobility but there is a ceiling. Great benefits.

    Cons

The pay is not so great. Upper management is not the best and they constantly cause people to worry about job security. There is a significant amount of rollover with staff as people find better paying jobs or just decide to leave.

    Advice to Management

Pay people what they are worth. Invest in your staff to try to retain such amazing people. Money is important, yes, but your amazing museum is losing quality.

I have been working at The Field Museum full-time

    Pros

The mission, the incredibly talented and passionate staff, the access to unlimited learning and vast collections.

    Cons

The organization does very little to invest in talent or professional development. Employee retention and growth does not seem to be a priority.

    Pros

    Great work culture
    Extremely enjoyable coworkers
    Good benefits
High degree of workplace flexibility in the Sciences (easy to take time off, adjust hours, etc)
    Lots of independence
Interesting environment with fascinating things going on all around you.
All your friends think you have a really cool job (even though in fact the day to day of it is rather mundane.)

    Cons

    Little to no advancement possibilities
Historic Pay freezes, no cost of living increases = loyalty tax for long term employees
    Uneven equity reviews across institution
Silo-ed problem persists despite management efforts to de-silo departments

    Advice to Management

Day to day work culture is highly dependent upon one's individual manager. There are some really great ones and some really terrible ones. This problem has gotten better in part, but in general HR does not seem to be equipped to deal with those that aren't suited to staff management duties.

Review the historic freezes in pay and adjust salaries accordingly. Giving good benefits doesn't make up for poor annual take-home.
