The Works Design Communications Response

We want to start by thanking you for taking the time to write a review about your time at The Works. It’s our goal to be an outstanding place to work, and understanding where we can improve is important. Although you are no longer working with us, we want to share some of the ways we’re working to address your concerns: - The Works is a creative studio. People need to be free to share ideas and opinions and have good relationships with others. To support that, we have added an HR professional to our team. - We listened to employees, and are happy to say we've eliminated the holiday break policy mentioned. - We've invested in resource management – people and software – it’s resulted in more proactive approaches to scheduling work. That being said, we provide a very high level of client service, and our work is still seasonal. Some months involve long hours – this may not be for everyone and we respect that. - We are developing new lines of business to reduce the seasonal nature of our workload. Meanwhile, we’ve implemented more flexible work-hours to reduce downtime and improve work-life balance. - The Works is a proud member of the Corktown community and we love our neighbours. The safety of our employees is incredibly important to us. We will remind employees that we have implemented recommended practices in place to ensure safe transit home at late hours including providing a company-paid taxi ride. We want to thank you again for sharing your experiences and wish you all the best.

Pros

Some friendly coworkers. Many people are nice and smart.

Cons

The pretense of one big happy family quickly fades after a few run ins with some insular owners who have a bizarre way of working and treating their staff. Managers aren't really in charge. It's a very strange culture. High stress and lots of blamestorming going on. Quite childish at times.

Pros

- Without question, this is the best team of people I’ve ever worked with in my entire life. Everyone is so smart, so talented, so kind, and so helpful. The Works team is a team in the best sense of the word - everyone pulls together. - The management is humble and progressive in that they are always looking at how to evolve and improve their offerings and business model. They make smart decisions and significant investments in training and technology so that staff can support growth, and make the company better. - The quality of work produced is outstanding. The creative (both writing and design) is something you can really stand behind and be proud of. It’s a good feeling when you are able to make clients happy, rather than being asked to rush work and deliver something sub-standard. Quality matters here (rather than speed or price.) - New ideas, well researched, are always welcomed. All opinions matter. - Generous flex-time policy, great summer hours, generous vacation/paid-time-off policy. - If you are looking for a mentor, you’ll find one here. The Works is a multi-generational workplace and lots of people here have 15 or even 25 years of experience in strategy, design, typesetting or copywriting under their belts. They have seen it all, and are generous with wisdom and guidance. - Personal issues (be it health, family matters, a disability) are handled by management and colleagues with grace and compassion. If you care about this place, this place will take care of you when you need it most.

Cons

- The standards are quite high. You are expected to bring your best each day. But, this tends to bring out your best, and there are resources around to support you and help you learn. - Sometimes, short-term needs of clients will have to be put before your personal plans. - Backfilling roles after staff departures takes time because to reduce turnover, the bar is set very high. However, hiring decisions are almost universally good. - The administrative load can be heavy, but changes are being made in this area.
