Don't work in merchandising

Pros

Good discount, interesting coworkers, fun products, a chance to get a 360 degree view of a business and learn how the customer service/warehouse/marketing/creative happens along with the merchandising.

Cons

For the merchandising team, there is no work life balance and there is almost no chance to move up. The company is strangely sexist, one of the only buyers to ever get promoted from assistant to associate to buyer was a man. I have spoken to former female buyers for this company and they confirmed this problem. Almost all top managerial positions are held by white guys. Since the company explicitly wants to be socially responsible and liberal, this is ironic. Pay is EXTREMELY low, well below competition. When I worked there, managers were abusive and nothing was ever done about it.

Company has lost its values

Pros

When I started the pro was the people that I worked with. As people started to leave, management did not replace them ending up with a skeleton crew of overworked people adding to high tensions and overall terrible work environment.

Cons

You will be asked to do 10 different jobs yet still be questioned about everything you do and micromanaged. The only people allowed to have an expertise are the heads of departments everyone else is there to serve their whims. Your job description can change at any point without your input. You will be asked to manage political tension between your manager and people in other departments with zero support. If you complain, you will be admonished or fired. If your department scores low on morale on HR surveys, your team leader will launch a witch hunt trying to find out who "tattled" on them to HR. Approaching HR about inappropriate behaviours, bullying and harassment will lead nowhere and in fact makes it worse because then they'll involve your manager and refuse to protect you. Your yearly reviews have nothing to do with your work performance and everything to do with how much people like you or not. You will only be promoted if you are friends with your manager.

Hello. Thank you for taking the time to submit your feedback. We are a bit surprised to hear this feedback as it describes an Uncommon Goods we don't recognize. While we are glad to hear you had enjoyed your time with us working amongst your peers, we do understand that everyone has individual experiences on their teams. We are working to address resourcing and have already increased headcount in several departments. We are disappointed to hear about your feedback but I can assure you we will continue to look to help our team succeed by giving them the tools and resources they need and continuing to support them in their journeys while creating a safe place for them to share their concerns and ideas for improvement with their team and with HR. We want to be our team member's favorite place to work and we will do our best in achieving that goal.
