Pros
Transparency in the decisions made by the owners, including clear explanations of why a decision is being made and what outcomes are expected. Trust from the owners in the work I’m doing in my current role is also important. Finally, I’m regularly being asked about resources or tools that could improve not only my work but the business’s overall performance.
Cons
Some of the tools that are valid and useful for developers are not necessarily relevant for sales, BDR, or marketing roles.
Pros
Work from home preferred Reasonable salary (no overtime or bonuses though). Skill / knowledge level is very low so it's easy to stand out.
Cons
The company is managed by individuals with limited formal education or experience in game development or software engineering. The owner lacks real expertise in 3D engines and demonstrates minimal understanding of programming patterns or software architecture, leading to chaotic and low-quality work. The business operates with a "cut corners" mentality, prioritizing speed over quality. Employees are discouraged from producing thorough work, and taking the time to do things properly is often met with reprimands. The company’s name can be misleading, as they have no direct connection to Unity Technologies, which may cause confusion for potential clients and employees alike. During my time there, I worked on a project where the results were being misrepresented to the client. I was reassigned to another project to fix poorly written code. When I returned to the original project, the client was surprised to learn that I hadn’t been working on it full-time, despite being led to believe otherwise. After this, I experienced persistent negative treatment from the owners, which led to my resignation. Upon resigning, I was terminated immediately without notice or explanation, and was reminded not to inform clients. Other employees reported similar experiences when they inquired about my departure, some of whom were also let go without notice. Update: Since leaving, I, along with other former employees, have faced ongoing legal threats and harassment. Some reviews from others mentioning non-payment have been removed, while the owners appear to have posted their own 5-star reviews. I believe my previous review was removed unfairly, but I won’t be intimidated into silence.
Pros
I had a good working relationship with the brother of the owner and the project manager.
Cons
I'm not going to bother writing down all the bad things about this company because it will take too long and I just don't want to waste my energy on them. First of all, my paltry salary was the same as the one I had 10 years prior and £10k less than my previous role. When I asked about this before my start date, I was told it was because I hadn't submitted a code sample during the interview process. There was no opportunity for negotiation. I was told they would review it after my 6 month probation. Well I passed my probation and there was no change in my salary. My 6 month review was basically 28 minutes of being told where to improve (ignoring all the good work I did) and I was given 2 minutes at the end to talk. I constantly felt under pressure due to the owner's micro management style. He didn't care about my development. He just wanted things done quickly with no regard for best practices. A few weeks after I passed my 6 month probation, I received an email out of nowhere basically telling me I'm fired for not being good enough. This was when I was put on a project that was already way behind schedule so no matter how hard I worked, it was always going to make me look like I wasn't doing enough. Two days later, I got fired again so never got paid for my notice period. Funnily enough, the same thing happened to the programmer who was there before I joined the company. I was accused of gross misconduct but when I asked for evidence, they failed to deliver. There is so much more that I could talk about but I really can't be bothered. BTW ignore those zero effort 5 star reviews. They are from the owner and his wife. He mentions flexible hours but when I was working there it was strictly 9am-5pm with only a half hour lunch break.
