Hi, it’s Erica - People Director at Velstar. It’s obviously disappointing to read that this is what you've taken away from your time with us and while I recognise that everyone's experiences are different, I thought it was important to respond and give a little balance. The SLT has an open door approach to feedback and when I joined Velstar I met with everybody in the agency, individually, to understand what life at here is like and to try and build a picture of what works well and what doesn’t, direct from the source. As well as having conversations with the team and listening to what people are saying, we closely monitor our ‘people’ stats to make sure everyone’s happy, healthy and working well together. Our current employee turnover is just 5%, we have very low levels of sickness absence and in a recent employee survey, 88% said they’d recommend Velstar as a place to work. Is there room for improvement? Of course, and that’s why we’ll continue to work on and invest in initiatives that make life at Velstar better for everyone.

Pros

You can work with some really great developers.

Cons

One of the major issues I've encountered at Velstar is the lack of care for their employees. Velstar tried to improve employee wellbeing by conducting an employee survey back in Autumn 2023. You could either answer this anonymously or with your name included. I chose to include my name and position so my concerns could be identified and solved. However, I was completely ignored. Months later, after still being ignored, I raised the same concerns with the SLT directly, and once again I was ignored. Completely ghosted to the point where they didn’t speak to me for the entirety of my notice period. There’s this facade that they’re all about the people, but the truth is they’re not. There has been cases of employees being harassed by other members of the team and the higher ups doing nothing about it. The matter of fact is they only care about you if you’re at director level. Velstar claim to have an “open door” policy but it’s worth noting that during my 2 years and 3 months at Velstar, I did not once speak with the CEO. No introduction when I first joined, they weren’t involved in any onboard, any of my probation meetings, and not once did they even bother to get to know me. Not even a single Slack message. I don’t even think they knew my name.

Hi, it’s Erica - People Director at Velstar Thanks for sharing your feedback. While I can’t comment on specifics around what happened with your survey responses and any concerns you raised (because that was before my time), it’s not nice to hear that you felt ignored and this isn’t something we want to see happening. I’ve heard you, that’s taken on board and we’ll make sure things are done a little differently in future. It's surprising that you've said that you didn’t speak to or hear from the CEO during your time with us though, because I do know that he personally messaged you to congratulate you on outstanding customer feedback. Although he doesn’t get involved in probation meetings, at all-company meetings he makes it clear that his inbox is always open and if anybody wants to meet with him or ask questions then they’re welcome to. That being said, we know that general communication and feeling seen and heard can be challenging when working in a hybrid/remote way, so that’s something we’ll look to work on. With regards to your claim about harassment, it’s important for me to be clear that any allegations would be investigated fairly, thoroughly (in line with company policy), and with the support of an external, impartial legal advisor if needed.
