Pros

Cheap housing, decent direct management, access to riding and adventure gear on days off.

Cons

Extremely long work hours including a 13 hour day on Christmas, low-pay, upper management takes full advantage of their right to enter your housing and wake you up on days off to come to work or check to make sure you aren't breaking rules which in itself is there right but is an extremely bad look to take advantage of when it isn't an emergency situation. This will also vary from department to department, but I was spoken to like an uneducated child on a number of occasions and frankly approached by HR about my religious preferences in the middle of my shift in an uncomfortable and completely inappropriate way.

Thanks for taking the time to review your time with us. At the risk of sounding defensive, I want to take the time to address your disappointments. I apologize if we did not communicate that we have guests all day on Christmas, and that the kitchen crew would be working long hours on that day, and, to your point, many days. Our pay is based on the benefit of "cheap" housing you pointed out - which includes meals and activities. So, I understand that it would seem like our hourly rate is low if viewed independently, but I would assert that the total compensation is competitive with other entities in this area when considering the substantial benefit of housing alone. I will investigate the intrusion on your private time and space. I think it is fair to say that it is rare, and it is for a specific purpose which we would deem an emergency or a dilemma worthy of the intrusion, most often at the request of another tenant, staffer, or manager. I would assert that insinuating that we "take advantage of our right" to essentially "raid" the housing to look for violations would be making a false assumption. We also advise against discussions of "hot buttons" in the workplace and with guests - religion and politics in particular - starting at our orientation. Again, I will look into this. Lastly, I am sorry that you felt as if you were treated as a child - that is not what we are striving to do with our staff. Thanks again for your feedback. We take it seriously and use it to grow and improve in our leadership and stewardship of the staff.

Pros

I worked here for a total of 5 seasons, one of which was this past summer after a 2.5 year "hiatus." The ranch is situated in the most beautiful location. You will spend your season with 50-60 other staff members who are carefully and diligently interviewed and selected in order to maintain a wonderful work culture. The upper management do a fabulous job training and teaching staff about the mission of the ranch, as well as implementing that throughout the seasons. It is hard work, but extremely rewarding. You are able to participate in almost all of the activities the ranch offers. It is the healthiest mindset and one of the most fulfilling places I've ever worked.

Cons

These are "cons" that actually become "pros": - Limited internet - No cell service - Remote living (40 minutes outside of Steamboat). - Work on holidays

Pros

Beautiful work environment, nearly 600 acre ranch surrounded on 3 sides by a million acres of Routt National Forest/Zirkel Wilderness. But the people, from the owners, to the management, to the seasonal staff, to the amazing and interesting guests that stay...after 38 seasons I can say that it is the people that make Vista Verde Ranch special, and a special place to work and live.

Cons

For the F&B department, the days can be long (10-12 hours, or more!), but the ranch is closed for about 14 weeks/year during the off-seasons of spring and fall.

Well, we were honored to have you and your family for all these years. Thanks for taking the time to post this - we are grateful for your many contributions to the ranch, particularly for the culture you established in the kitchen. There are many folks who would include their interactions with you under the "pro" column - you were a big reason others had a great experience in the kitchen. You will be missed, for sure, but we know you will be a positive influence in your new community. Again, thanks for your hard work, but thanks even more for your leadership and friendship to us all. We'll do our best to heed your advice, too!
