Pros

Highly competent technical team, innovative tech, many opportunities to learn.

Cons

HR is placed far above the technical aspects of this company. This is prominent in hiring decisions, where HR is given authority to hire friends for unnecessary roles rather than much-needed technical employees. The poor prioritization of technical hiring further harms the ability of the company to achieve important goals, the result being huge pressure on engineers to work more than what is reasonable, even by start-up standards. Aside from being detrimental to the success of the company technologically, it is also frivolous financially, which is unwise in a startup environment. Allowing HR to run a tech company is unlikely to be a recipe for success. Would not recommend this company if job stability is at all important to you.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review! VueReal's hiring roadmap comes directly from its business, products, and technology roadmap. The community leaders at VueReal decide what additional skill sets they need and when they need them based on the roadmaps and OKRs (objective and key-results). The HR team gets involved in sourcing suitable candidates for the time frame suggested by the community leaders and engage candidates in the hiring process. Our hiring process is developed to assess two key areas: technical and cultural fit. A hiring committee is formed for each available position to follow through the assessment and to make a recommendation on hiring a candidate. For technical fit, the committee looks at technical skills, problem solving capability, trainability, and creativity. For cultural fit the committee evaluates how a candidate represents VueReal VUEs (Vigorous, United, Ethical). Vigorous: We believe that to succeed in a technology start up, team members should be able to work on tough challenges and to not give up easily due to failures. Furthermore, the team member should have the tenacity to address those challenges by solving one problem at a time without losing sight. United: For us it is extra important to be united as we have a true multidisciplinary technology (material, device, physics, system, mechanical, electronics, optics, etc ) and our team members need to work very closely together. If there is a single doubt from one member of the hiring committee about “UNITED” we do not go ahead with hiring. We have had our fair share of relaxing this requirement and paid the price later. Ethical: We owe it to our team, family and community and the world to behave in a way that is ethical and not compromising any humane values. As you can see, to succeed in our mission, our cultural fit is a must for us and not just a nice to have. Because of our hiring plan we have a small but mighty team that has achieved significant technical and business milestones (we will share them in due time). For example, we demonstrated several fully functional displays developed entirely in Waterloo, Canada by the VueReal team (backplane, drivers, red&green&blue microLEDs, printing, inspection, module assembly, electronics, etc.). We are very proud of our team and its achievements and we owe it to our team to protect them, trust them and safeguard our values.
