Whip Mix - Engineering Positions

Pros

Whip Mix has been in business a long time and pay is pretty competitive for the Louisville market.

Cons

The engineering environment is right on the factory floor, which can be okay as there is a production support component to the job responsibilities. There is a lot of traffic in and out of the office all day, making concentration difficult at times. The office is basically a glass box, with engineers being monitored constantly by production associates and supervisors, who will complain if it seems engineers are getting "privileges" that exceed those of other factory workers. Engineers are treated in a very blue collar fashion, with fixed hours for arrival, lunch, and departure. Don't ever be late when returning for lunch! As you will generate complaints from other production associates and supervisors. There is no working late even if you desire or need to catch up. The the R&D role for engineers is greatly overstated, as engineers work on a task by task basis and never work with sales and marketing for new products.

Pros

401k Match. Manager was really good about personal time off, schedule flexibility.

Cons

Management did not deal with conflict and would ignore issues until they blew up. Insurance costs are way too high. You have to include the someone's direct manager in all communications with them or ask their manager for the person's assitance. This is a major block to productivity.

Nepotism at its finest

Pros

Placeholder until you find another job.

Cons

Don't work here if you don't share the same last name as the family that owns it. 2 recent rounds of layoffs due to poor company performance and they name the daughter of one of the owners as the new CEO. She skipped over people with 20+ years of experience because she's part of the owning family. This should tell you all you need to know about how this place operates and who they truly value contrary to their "We're all family" message.
