Toxic environment, don't join

Pros

Relatively competitive pay for local big4 firm. But be warned that there is a significant paycut during the notice period, and the notice period is longer than industry standard. Good reputation so when you apply to other firms they will take you.

Cons

Toxic environment and bosses - screaming is commonplace, expected response time is a few minutes (even outside of working hours), training as a junior is poor because you're treated as dispensable and everyone expects you to leave anyway. Processes are poor and quality of work is not good as bosses are fickle and keep changing their minds at the last minute. Hours are worse than normal law hours but importantly the treatment during is awful. There's a reason that the turnover rate is extremely high. All the stories are true...

You are just a number.

Pros

- Good brand name in the industry - Quite a fair bit of work with big name companies

Cons

- Hours are terribly long and that explains the extremely high turnover rate. People come and go the time. They do not care much about your welfare or mental well-being and work you till the ground - after all, you are just a number and their brand name would attract fresh meat to the grinder all the time. - Your work is not appreciated and everyday is just sheer drear. - Though the compensation package appears to be competitive, do note of various ways the firm clawbacks from you. The salary is made up of basic + an advanced discretionary bonus (a sizable chunk of it forms your full salary). This is not paid to you when you are serving your notice period. When you factor in all of these, the firm's pay package is actually not as good as it claims to be. Generally a stingy firm - one of the first big law firms to institute pay cuts in this COVID-19 climate across the board (even for legal secretaries). - Firm culture is not good generally. People do not feel that they belong there and many people working there are dissatisfied and unhappy. Many are just looking to use it as a stepping stone or a stop-gap place until they find somewhere more sustainable. - Quite a lot of office politics despite the already terrible work environment.
