We’ve joined forces with Luton Town Football Club apprentices to encourage the wearing of face coverings. For the 13th year, we’ve given the latest intake of players a year’s free travel to study & train. In return, the Luton Town FC Academy players are acting as role models for our younger passengers.

One of Elstree & Borehamwood's most beloved figures has been recognised for his dedication and outstanding customer service. Siggy, who is Thameslink's oldest member of staff, came to Britain from Barbados aged 23 as part of the Windrush generation, sailing into Southampton in March 1962 and starting work as a cleaner in Marylebone station in central London the very next day. He said: "I used to see passengers coming through the station when they were seven or eight. Now they are big men or women, taller than me, with children of their own."

Passenger Host and environmental champion Eloise Rowan, 30, is encouraging people not to travel if they feel unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms. ?I?ve never seen the railway as quiet but we?re gradually welcoming more customers. Most people are very considerate when it comes to social distancing and I?ve seen a lot of people wearing face coverings. If you?re unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms, please don?t travel; we need to think of others and help prevent the spread. ?The NHS has done an incredible job; when I saw an appeal for donations for my local hospital, I had to help. Within an hour of speaking to colleagues at Luton station, I had financial donations and people bringing things in; the response was overwhelming. In the end, I dropped off over 750 food, drink and personal items."
Father-of-3 Reece Hill, 33, encourages people to socially distance and not bunch together in the middle of trains. ?I caught a train the other night and there were a few people so I walked through to the next carriage which was empty; it?s important that where there's room we spread out. ?I?m married with 3 kids; Mischa, 11, Payten who?s 7 and Noah, 5. They love the railway. They were never interested in trains but now recognise different styles! I?m a massive football fan and watch Arsenal a lot. I started taking my son last season; it?s a bit of an adventure for him. We get the train to Finsbury Park and it?s a nice father-and-son day. ?I?ve worked in rail for 3 years. I used to work at a print finishers before my best friend encouraged me to switch. He started as a shunter and become a trainee driver. Sadly, he passed away just before he passed out to become a driver. He'd been on at me for years to join. I started as a train presentation team leader and for the last 2 years I?ve been a shunter - a parking attendant for trains!
The Prince's Trust course graduates and uni friends, Markus Balogun and Francis Jack, from our IT team, advise people to go online and plan their journeys. They have followed similar paths, joining GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway) through the ?Get into Railways? programme. We?re sharing their story on International Youth Day. - I saw an opportunity to marry my IT skills with a passion for transport," says Markus, 24. "The programme gives you a real insight into rail and you gain skills in areas from first aid to employment. - Candidates usually go on to be platform staff but with my experience they wanted to try something new. In a way, I managed to mould the course to suit me; I?m very grateful. When lockdown came we had to help restructure and get equipment to office-based teams; it was a crazy time." - For young people wanting to kickstart their career, I'd definitely recommend ?Get into Railways? - there are so many opportunities. I love my team, we get on well and work hard. I?m pretty fortunate to have found something I enjoy this much!"
