One of Hull’s famous cream phone boxes has been given an extra dash of colour thanks to imaginative youngsters from schools supported by Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University. Children from the charity, which aims to give young people from the region new opportunities to learn and thrive, have created dozens of pieces of art celebrating Hull’s heroes which now adorn KCOM’s classic cream K6 phone box in Hull City Centre. Portraits of Hull legends such as William Wilberforce, Clive Sullivan and Amy Johnson, Bee Lady Jean Bishop can now be seen in the kiosk, at the top of Alfred Gelder Street, which has also been dressed in the Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University colours. The design has been launched to celebrate KCOM becoming a gold partner with the charity, further strengthening ties between the two local institutions. The children’s university regularly holds sessions in KCOM’s Carr Lane Learning Zone before the youngsters head out into town to discover more about Hull’s history and most famous sons and daughters. As KCOM celebrates its 120th birthday in 2024, Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University has been chosen as one of the telecom company’s charities of the year.

Being around animals can help reduce stress and put a smile on your face, which is what wellbeing week at KCOM is all about. This is the third year that we’ve invited the RSPCA in to bring some of their loveable animals to meet our staff and it always proves a hit. Thanks to RSPCA Hull and East Riding Branch, to everyone who came along and, most of all, Nero the pooch and kittens Tom and Dougie. #MentalHealthMatters #Wellbeing #KCOM
Wow, what a day yesterday was! KCOM colleagues conjured up a tour de force of biking brilliance as they took part in our 120 Cycling Challenge. The challenge was part of Wellbeing Week – with the emphasis on exercise being a brilliant way to keep both body and mind healthy. It was fantastic to see so many people having fun, and our offices were buzzing. We had some serious competitors really going for it!! So far the challenge has raised £525 for our Charity partners, with more donations still rolling in. Massive thanks to everyone who took part at KCOM, including the amazing supporters who cheered on the participants. Another thanks goes to Louise Babych, Ian Midgley and Robyn, for all the help to make the challenge happen, and to Hull & East Yorkshire Children's University for the loan of the bikes. #KCOM #MentalHealthMatters #MomentsForMovement #Wellbeing
Alongside Mental Health Awareness Week, it's also Wellbeing Week here at KCOM. A big thanks to Hull and East Yorkshire Mind for coming down to our Salvesen Way Office this morning, to have a chat with some of the team. We listened to a humbling story of lived experience, and the help that the Charity gave to support recovery. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #NoMindLeftBehind
KCOM has today delivered a plan that could enable other broadband providers to share its passive infrastructure without the need for more telegraph poles. The East Yorkshire-based broadband provider has today produced the results of a feasibility study, describing how other broadband providers could deliver their services using KCOM’s infrastructure, without the need to install their own network of telegraph poles. A KCOM spokesperson said: “Since receiving Connexin’s request for access to our passive infrastructure in January, our teams have worked flat out, from a standing start, to create a blueprint of systems and processes to handle and deliver requests for sharing KCOM’s ducts and poles, potentially saving local residents from the stress and inconvenience caused by the proliferation of new poles in streets across Hull and East Yorkshire. “Today, we’ve passed that to Connexin, on a confidential basis, and asked for its views. We want to know if it would meet Connexin’s requirements. Subject to its comments, we hope to start commercial negotiations in April.” KCOM has repeatedly stated that it is willing to work with other providers to provide fair and reasonable access to its passive infrastructure and today marks an important step in fulfilling that commitment. Any broadband provider would be able to use the infrastructure sharing service that KCOM has developed, in accordance with KCOM’s regulatory duties.
