This week, Michael Pitta , our lead tech recruiter, offers tips and insights on applying for a job in the field. Q: What advice do you have for recent graduates on the application process? A: Coming in fresh out of school is always harder because you don’t have that experience on your resume. In that case, we’ll ask what kind of side projects candidates have worked on, or projects they’ve completed in class. We want to know what they’re doing outside of the program to learn some of the harder skills compared to the theoretical concepts. You don’t need specific technical expertise in one area. When you are junior, it’s great to have a broad skill set, but it’s good to have something that you’re passionate about. We always look for ways to match up passionate candidates with new projects that we’re working on now within the company.

Here are your weekly insights from Viacom’s Talent Acquisition team. This week, Michael Pitta, our lead tech recruiter, offers insights on working in a tech role at Viacom. Q: What are some resources that people might be surprised to hear about? A: We have a “hacker lab” called the Viacom Experience Room where a lot of our engineers have the opportunity to work on VR/AR projects. It’s a pretty cool thing to be able to develop an Alexa app where you can ask SpongeBob questions. Other employees can also visit every Friday to learn about what the team is working on while playing with the new devices. Q: Any other cool tech opportunities? A: We have internal “Hackathons” a few times a year. It really started with the need for new ideas. The most recent event was about Paramount Network, where we focused our efforts on marketing new content. What’s exciting is the influx of diverse thinkers coming in to collaborate with the engineers. Engineers can often be working on one project for a long time, and this is a way to break it up and examine a problem from all angles.
Leading the way! Congratulations to our executives who made the Cablefax 100 list this year with their insight, creativity and innovative thinking.
