At The Bread Factory, there's undeniable artistry at play! Amidst the hum of machinery and the aroma of freshly baked bread, our skilled bakers transform simple ingredients into loaves of art. From kneading the dough to shaping it into perfectly formed loaves, our bakers pour their hearts and soul into their craft. Each loaf becomes a unique work of art, with its own character and personality. As we celebrate World Art Day let's celebrate the passion, skill, and care that goes into every loaf.
Have you seen our GAIL’s bread somewhere different … We are thrilled to share some exciting news! Our partnership with Waitrose has expanded, bringing GAIL's bread to 20 additional branches! A milestone on our journey of making great bread accessible to more people.
Coming to work... it's part of your daily routine, something you do over and over again. Often that repetition can make us blind to the little changes going on around us, like an adjustment to a recipe or a change to a policy. But enough of these small changes can create a huge impact and difference. Which is what we learn this week. We had an audit in our Bread and Packing department. The auditor who graded us was a familiar face who had been here before, through her fresh set of eyes she saw our big impact and was impressed by the improvement and investments we've made. So we'd like to give a massive shoutout to our Technical, Bread, RBM and packing Teams, your fantastic work has not gone unnoticed. P.S. Remember to take a moment from your routine, pause and have a look around to appreciate the small changes.
Why retire when you can keep on going? Around 1.5 million people in the UK are still working beyond retirement and Harold in our team is one of them! Harold’s first job was as a labourer, the work was tough, and the hours were long. He loved being able to work with his hands and see the fruits of his labour at the end of the day. Over time, he honed his skills and became a skilled tradesman. Harold decided to take the leap and start his own business as a building maintenance contractor. At the age of 66, he decided he didn’t want to retire, he wanted to keep going and started to look for a new job. That's when he discovered The Bread Factory. He quickly got into the swing of things and since then Harold has become a great addition to the Central Kitchen Hygiene team, always smiling and spreading his infectiously happy mood. His Career Advice is “Always be open to education, no matter what age you are you can always learn something new.” Age really is nothing but a number!
Women have been at the heart of the baking industry for centuries, and their contributions to the craft have been immeasurable. From the traditional sourdough bread of Europe to the colourful pastries of South America, women have played a crucial role in the development and innovation of baking techniques, recipes, and products. Despite this rich history, the baking industry has traditionally been male-dominated. However, over the past few decades, more and more women have entered the field and have been making waves with their innovative approaches to baking. At TBF, women have roles in everything we do. Over 580 women's hands help make our bread, cake, and pastries. In celebration of International Women's Day, we want to highlight the words of those very women so we asked, “What makes you you?” and we’re asking you the same question…
It’s often very easy to undersell yourself, your skills and your potential. Instead, stand-up be confident and know you can do it! Meet Cyril our Head of Production. As a child, He dreamed of becoming a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driver and travelling across the country (this is before he knew his dad was a Baker). Cyril started his career with a baking apprenticeship. Here he fell in love with the craft and discovered the joy of creating something delicious from simple ingredients. Cyril’s friend Sebastien convinced him to move to the UK and start working for the crazy place called The Bread Factory. We met him on the 11th of March 1998 when he joined us as a servant baker, which involved mixing dough to cleaning the bakery. Curiosity helped him develop and understand how the business ran, which led to a promotion to Head Baker, then production manager. Cyril’s career has grown from strength to strength and he is often referred to being the 'glue' of our bakery. Cyril’s goal is to continue to grow and craft and baking changes and he is in the perfect role to continue to do just that.
It’s National careers week! We believe you move more than just up and down the career ladder. It’s a journey you can go, forward, back, left, right, spin around but most importantly have some fun. With careers posing truly limited possibilities, there is something for everyone! There is no need for the word “career” to feel scary, especially when starting out or jumping into something new. This week we thought about what we can do to celebrate National Careers Week while relieving some of that fear. So we’ve decided to take this opportunity to share some of our people’s stories, how they started, where they are, and their goals. Hopefully, you can see a bit of yourself in them and know we’ve all been there. Watch this space over the next few days... Thank you Helen Tupper for the quote!
It’s National Apprenticeship Week! 👇🏾 McKinsey estimates that up to 375 million people may need to learn new job skills by 2030 in order to adapt to technological transformation. As our world evolves so do the skills we need, which is why we believe Apprenticeships are so important. Did you know… Apprenticeships are for everyone? If you’re starting your career, looking for a change or just want to develop your skills, you can start an Apprenticeship. In celebration we thought we’d do something a little different, we’ll be showing you a glimpse into our Apprentices at The Bread Factory and the value they bring to us. Follow us on Tik Tok @thebreadfactory and buckle up as we drop a new video on our apprentices every day this week.
We often donate products as and when we can. So now Christmas has come to a close, we decided to donate 5,000 surplus mince pies to the NHS. The Mince Pies that YOU all supported to make went to Doctors, Physios, Nurses, Porters, Patients, Ambulance workers, Cleaners, Midwives, and more... Well done to Production, Packing, Transport, and the Talent team for organising this and getting them sent out to Guys & St Thomas and West Middlesex hospitals. Getting 5,000 out on one night is no easy task! "Thank you, I didn't get a lunch break today because we are short of staff. This made my day and kept me going on a long shift in the Cancer Support Ward." - Nicola NHS
