I started applying for openings in 2013 in anticipation of moving to Hawaii. When I finally got to Kona by way of Honolulu, I was given an interview in July 2014 at their corporate headquarters.. So I was referred to no less than 2 different station managers (now 3 as of March 2015). I interviewed 2 or 3 more times as positions came open. I had called and followed up only to find out on two occasions that my applications were "lost" and had no clue who I was. The second interview, I knew I was already in trouble when the interviewers asked Why did I move to Hawaii? (in other words why do we need ANOTHER outsider applying for these jobs??), "Why is your hair so long? Are you planning to cut it?", " Are you a woman?" I said I'm not cutting it, and YES I live as a MTF in Hawaii and PROUD of it, but I also pointed out it shouldn't matter since I have a lot of valuable experience and knowledge to offer and help make ACS an even better operation. Also I mentioned that I was eager to learn and want to do things safely according to ACS/FAA/TSA policies. What employer could argue with that, besides I like to work TDY AND fill in any shifts when others are sick or not showing up? What MORE could an employer want? Oh wait, Im openly MTF gay and have long hair! I learned over the years that Canada, and other countries in Europe have absolutely no issue with gay men/gay men with long hair. Yet, they continually post ads almost monthly in Kona wanting to hire!
Illegal and discriminatory questions but they will out-rightly deny it. My word against theirs as always.
If you have years of experience and NOT a Hawaiian local, and a LGBTQ then ACS is FOR YOU! Stay classy Hawaii, stay decades behind!
