      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      24 Apr 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at AppFolio in Feb 2023

      Interview

not impressed with AppFolio whatsoever. process went as follows: 1. initial phone screen with recruiter: went well, recruiter was kind. 2. video screen with director: director was kind, told me multiple times how he's honored that i'd consider joining them, said he didn't even feel like doing any technical questions with me (red flag). he showcased the product to me and it looked terrible (red flag). i suggested a few tips on how confusing the product looked as a brand new customer, which he really appreciated. he told me that most of the devs pair program and that most of the teams just recently became single threaded but that the chaos is still there (big red flags). regardless, i had low expectations for their hiring bar at this point, and decided to just get practice in. 3. final rounds pt 1: two 1 hour coding rounds 3a. first interviewer was kind, said he wouldn't dock me on asking for syntax, but ended up docking me on asking for syntax in the post interview feedback. i solved his problem for him easily - was an easier medium LC. 3b. second interviewer and question was terrible. very challenging hard LC, interviewer seemed to think it was incredibly straight forward. not personable at all. he barely said anything during the entire round; no tips were provided, even when asked. 4. final rounds pt II: can't remember exactly, there was a system design round and a fourth round. i was called one hour before these final two rounds and was told they were no longer interested. 5. recruiter feedback: thankfully the recruiter provided me feedback, but i was quite shocked with the overall feedback, especially that asking for syntax docked me when i was told it wouldn't. overall: 1. outdated product, UI, design 2. unrealistic FAANG level hiring bar (i work at FAANG and interview and it was never to this level) (5 rounds, 2 medium LC rounds total) 3. not at all competitive pay 4. interviewers need better training

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at AppFolio (Denver, CO) in Oct 2025

      Interview

I recently completed a 75-minute screening that included: 2–3 behavioral questions 5 rapid-fire system-design questions a 45-minute coding round and a short window for me to ask questions The technical questions were fairly straightforward, and I felt confident in my responses — clear, structured, and technically sound. While I haven’t received feedback yet, my best guess is that my rejection may have stemmed from the Q&A portion. I asked a few candid questions about the product vision, team culture, and growth opportunities — the kind of questions I believe any thoughtful engineer should ask when evaluating a team. Some of these seemed to catch the interviewers off guard, which might have left a mixed impression. Still, the engineers were pleasant, and the overall experience was positive. The only downside is the lack of feedback — something that always makes it difficult to learn what truly went wrong. Sometimes, teams might already have an internal candidate or be interviewing for formality’s sake — though that may not be the case here, the absence of closure leaves room for guesswork.

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at AppFolio (Santa Barbara, CA) in Oct 2025

      Interview

The interview process has 5 steps. The first step of the interview process is with the recruiter. If this goes well you will have to schedule a technical assessment with engineers in the company. I was only able to get to the technical interview phase of which I thought went decently well. The interview was will ask you a series of systems interview questions and then you have to solve up a coding problem. I did solve the coding problem and the interviewer close the call. I waited over a week to hear back from my results and j never received a follow up from the recruiter. I reached out via email to follow up with the recruiters and still no response. I then decide to call the recruiter and it seems like she forgot about me. For other developers who are applying for this company, be careful as it seems like they like to ghost people during the process. I wouldn’t waste my time.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Basic system design questions were asked even though it was for a mobile role. Coding questions consisted of parsing out strings to simulate command line instructions.
