Asked candidates to do a 10 minute presentation that answered several questions on how the process to develop the new Sustainability Plan would look like. I personally spent a whole week on the presentation with reading multiple long documents on their website, contacting city staff with questions and designing the presentation to look like their city design scheme. During my research I found city council documents showing that the city opposed state legislative mandates for cities in general but very strongly opposed legislative efforts to allow public employees to have union bargaining rights because it would interfere with the ability of the city to provide a good working environment for their employees. In other words, the city was anti-union and anti-worker rights. Because I was excited about improving sustainability efforts anywhere and everywhere I did not comment on this or show that I had seen this information anywhere in my interview. However, even without that, after my interview where they had asked for candidates to go above and beyond with providing a deliverable presentation for the city and the thank you notes I sent to all staff who interviewed me I did not hear back except for a form letter very briefly telling me I was denied. There was no thank you for the extra work that candidates put into the interview process with the presentation. I have the feeling that Arvada does not treat its employees well at all from all of the above information and that it is not a good working environment. Would not recommend to anyone unless you don't care much about workers' rights.
