      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      31 Jan 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Asana (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2019

      Interview

The whole process took two months from first contact till decision (mainly because of holidays and logistics). First there were two phone screening calls which I found engaging and refreshing: questions that probe your knowledge and experience with close to real-world situations. No gotcha questions. Even though the position I was applying to is for the Vancouver BC office, a decision was made to interview me on-site in the San Francisco HQ. The idea was for me to have a feel of the company’s culture, which honestly left me favourably impressed after a brief tour and conversations with people. There’s truly something special going on here in terms of the culture they managed to create and maintain. The questions revolved around past projects of mine, a “how would you implement this” kind of scenario, a coding test (50’ with my own laptop), and code review of said test. Again no gotcha questions here, so being prepared and going over my own work paid off. But… I have a moderate form of Asperger's Syndrome. Among other things this manifests itself by me missing social cues during conversations (i.e. “lecture mode”), avoidance of eye contact, intense focus on a single area of interest, you get the idea. On regular days that’s not a problem since I can allocate some energy to purposely take care of the social side of things, but during this interview I devoted 100% of my energy to solving the technical problem in front of me. And that’s where I failed: communication. For me doing both would be like juggling chainsaws and chewing gum at the same time. Some people can do it, but I guess that’s one wall I cannot climb despite my technical competence. Asana is a very inclusive organization, but I don’t see how they could accommodate people with AS considering their emphasis on interpersonal communication. Of course I could be wrong. TLDR; great place/culture but if you have Asperger’s Syndrome, this might not be a good fit for you.

I appreciate you sharing your candid feedback, and I am glad that overall, you found our culture and interview process - no gotcha questions, as you say - to be positive and unique. I really take to heart your feedback about your experience as a person with Asperger's Syndrome, how this affected your interview experience, and your perception that Asana may not be a welcoming or inclusive place. Our communications assessment is meant to allow for different communication styles, and this is an opportunity to evaluate any gaps in that process. Our standard practice is to also ensure that all candidates know upfront that we will offer alternate accommodations if needed, when the candidate requests them. We want to ensure that candidates feel they are in a trusted space to let us know about these accommodations so we can make them happen. I really appreciate you taking the time to get to know us, and thank you for helping us improve our interview process.

      Anonymous interview candidate
      Warsaw, Masovia

      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I interviewed at Asana (Warsaw, Masovia)

      Interview

Very nice and well-structured recruitment process from an HR perspective, with full interview rounds covering a wide range of topics. The highlight was the opportunity to speak directly with engineers from the company, which gave great insight into the team and the role. Unfortunately, the behavioral interview did not go as well as expected, as I did not showcase my experience and strengths strongly enough, which ultimately led to not moving forward in the process.
