Applied online with CV, cover letter, and application form. Was forwarded to an online assessment a few days later. Assessments consisted of a logical reasoning, numerical/graphical ability, and verbal analysis test.
After passing this I was invited to an assessment centre just over a week afterwards. The assessment centre was two days long. The first day was mostly a meet and greet with other graduates at their Devonport Royal Dockyard; they gave some presentations, followed by lunch and a tour around a warship in their dockyard. The final task was to complete a written assessment which was a straightforward S.W.O.T. analysis on a defense company. You don't need a suit for this day, some smart-casual clothing is best.
The second day was the assessment day. The assessment began with a brief introduction to the day, a timetable for all our activities, and notified of the forms we had to complete during the day. The first activity is a formal interview with two interviewers. Although formal, the interviewers were laid back and very pleasant to talk to - don't be afraid to check on your timing and ask questions.
The second activity is a 5 minute presentation to two assessors, this was on a technical subject which we were given a few days before the assessment centre. We had time between activities to draw up bullet points/diagrams on a large piece of presentation paper.
The final activity was a teamwork game assessed by our interview assessors - my team didn't get very far because we made some easy mistakes in calculations etc. but the key here is to keep positive, have some decent input in the discussions, and keep a logical mind. Overall an enjoyable day.
After the assessment centre it took just over a week to be contacted with the results. The only reason this is rated a difficult interview is because there is a lot to do and it's over 2 days - the activities themselves were fun and insightful.
