I applied online. I interviewed at BetterUp in Apr 2021
Interview
First talked to a recruiter, it was very cool and exciting. Then interviewed with an engineer which was fun and we had a lot of similar experiences and got along great. Then the take-home was basically building two apps from scratch with vague requirements on UI/UX beyond "don't spend more than 4 hours on it." At the 6.5 hour mark I turned in what I had and was rejected without feedback. If your hobby is spinning up new apps from nothing with webpacker and yarn then maybe you have a template to let you catch up in a reasonable amount of time, but for people who mostly work at scale it's a huge ask (in my defense compiling React on a 7 year old laptop doesn't help).
Thank you so much for your feedback. We are constantly working to improve our assessment process and the take-home assignment is absolutely one of the stages we have been working hard to refine. As we scale, we commit to keeping our candidate experiences' top of mind as we so appreciate the opportunity for consideration.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at BetterUp (Amsterdam) in Nov 2023
Interview
Straightforward process consists of three stages
- a call with recruiter.
- a call with Director.
- Onsite interviews (coding, system design, product awareness, culture).
- a call with CTO.
I passed the onsite interviews with very positive feedback, after that I had a call with the CTO was focus on past experiences and why I left my previous two companies.
After I finish everything, the recruiter sent me a rejection template email, I tried to ask for a feedback, he replied that it is against their policy to provide a detailed feedback, that was ridiculous and disrespectful specially after all the effort I did in this process.
I wouldn't recommend wasting your time with them and definitely I won't consider them at anytime in the future again.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at BetterUp (New York, NY)
Interview
The process took over a month - granted this happened overlapping a major US holiday, but still.
30 minute HR screen
60 minute technical screen
60 minute coding challenge (language of your choice, administered through karat if you choose anything other than Ruby)
2.5 hour virtual onsite with four phases - Hiring Manager phase, Cross-Functional phase, Values and Mindset phase, and a Director Interview at the end
30 minute CTO interview
60 minute systems design challenge
"Founders interview"
CEO interview was also floated as a possibility
My process ended after the systems design interview, a stage which I was one of the first to undergo.
The process is very focused on culture fit to the point where they even refer to it as "culture add". Interviewers are looking for people with certain values and that was made abundantly clear at each stage, in some cases to an uncomfortable level in my opinion.
You'll notice that there was no phase where I was able to talk to an engineer about day-to-day engineering life.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at BetterUp in Sept 2021
Interview
The Overall interview process was fine, nothing was overly difficult. I wasn’t giving an offer because I had already accepted with another company. Unfortunately I was waiting on the final round interview with the CEO but it couldn’t get scheduled fast enough.
