I applied online. I interviewed at Big Hairy Dog (Sacramento, CA) in Jan 2025
Interview
Unprofessional and unprepared. I had an interview scheduled and it was requested that I call in (weird, should be the other way around). I call on time and she's not available until end of day (no big deal, things happen). I call back at the requested time, get placed on hold for several minutes and once on the line she asks me what position I am applying for. Totally unprepared and unprofessional. To top it off she was rude and didn't ask very much about how my skills relate to the role. She then transferred me to the person in charge of a different part of the business, that was a relief! He was very nice and was more than willing to listen to as much about me and my skills as possible. I am marking it as a "difficult" interview because I had to deal with a person that did not care much about my answers so this was never going to work. Even if offered a position I would decline because I would be working alongside this individual.

Question 1
Why did you choose "no" when asked if we can call your most recent employer?

Interview
BHD conducts interviews in a 4 part process. 1, a phone screening. 2, a "practical test". 3, a whole day with them shadowing and doing a network test. 4, a conversation with the CEO. At the time of this writing, they don't share the actual pay scale until stage 4. For their sake I hope they change that process because it's not consistent with SB1162. The "practical test" is an attempt to see how you do with an extremely dated DOS version of the software they resell. They provide a pamphlet of instructions, but I didn't find it helpful. (pro tip: hit F1 for the help menu) I entertained the first two parts of the interview and explicitly asked them to share the pay scale. They never followed through, so I disqualified them from my job search. Internal process documentation is described as "pretty good". I picked up on there being a lot of undocumented tribal knowledge. No WFH offered. Flat org structure. Business model of Value Added Reselling.

Interview
Challenging, the interview process includes a one day process of building a POS installation. It included building the computer components, loading software, and test printing. It is a paid day. The hiring process is long and in my case I accepted another job before my last interview step.
