      Category Manager Interview

      30 Mar 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Fort Lauderdale, FL
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Chewy (Fort Lauderdale, FL) in Mar 2020

      Interview

Be weary of this company if they invite you down for a formal interview from out of state. The process leading up to the in-person interview was pleasant. I had several phone calls with Directors and found their questioning to be fairly rigorous (as expected). The recruiters I spoke with were very pleasant - no negatives there. The actual interview process what just OK. The individuals I spoke with seemed nice enough, but all had a similar tone - Chewy doesn’t have a solid training and resource program and lacks any sort of formal reviews. Even with my background so far, to expect a candidate to uproot their life without any sort of success plan in place is outlandish. Anywho - The negative for me came after the formal interview. Coming from a long flight out west, I was not overly impressed with the hotel they set up their candidate’s up in. Not only was it outdated, but it offered no sort of room service (not a snob, I promise) so I had to use my phone to navigate where the closest restaurant was. Turns out, the only food option around was a grocery store about 15 minutes away by foot. Not terrible but the weather was very poor when I was there. Yes, it was located close to downtown Ft. Lauderdale but for candidates taking lengthy flights, it seemed overwhelming to navigate and I really just wanted something quick and convenient. Ended up with the tried and true UberEats but was hoping to see more of the city, as it would have been a pretty major life decision if I moved down. Afterward when I came out out the interview and flew home? I submitted my expenses according to their policy. Even saved them some bucks by skipping meals because of my lack of desire to venture outside the hotel. What do I get back? About $85 shy of what they owed me. Never received any follow up (after numerous times reaching out) to see why my money was not returned. I got a call shortly after returning with an offer, however this sort of behavior was indicative of major cultural and professional advancement issues. Got the typical “I get to work with pets? What’s not to love” in every response. As a professional with over 12 years experience, I was able to see through this facade.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Chewy in Dec 2025

      Interview

he recruiter experience was positive and professional; however, the first-round interview itself was not. The interviewer joined with her camera off and did not acknowledge it, nor did she introduce herself (name, role, or background). My camera remained on throughout the interview. During the conversation, there was ongoing background noise, including a baby. During my second response, I paused to ask for clarification about the noise, as it was distracting and made it difficult to focus. At that point, the interviewer explained that her nanny was sick and she was working from home, which was why her camera was off. Given the circumstances, a brief pause or reschedule would have been more appropriate to ensure a focused and equitable interview environment. Several questions were structured as multiple questions combined into one, making them difficult to address clearly. The interview felt unorganized overall, with unclear prompts and limited follow-up. While the first portion of the interview was manageable, the tone shifted during the second response, after which the interview was abruptly concluded with “That’s it—any questions?” Because no introduction had been provided, I asked at the end of the interview for her role and background, which she acknowledged should have been shared earlier. Overall, the experience raised concerns about communication, organization, and leadership expectations, and did not reflect an environment that sets candidates or teams up for success. After the interview, I immediately withdrawn my application. I have never had an interview like this an Chewy should have baseline standards on conducting interviews.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Chewy

      Interview

Brace yourself if you go through this interview process, as it is overly scripted and unnecessarily drawn out. Over two weeks, I talked to seven different people. The interview format felt like you were taking the oral version of a standardized test based on the pre-distributed list of Chewy values. The questions were long-winded and clinical. Initially, I imagined working at Chewy would have been fun. There was no sense in interviewing for a job with a healthy work culture. In reality, almost everyone who interviewed me seemed non-plussed, and somebody used the word obedient as a top trait needed to be successful in this position. I now understand the comments left on Glassdoor by previous employees: "They are trying to emulate Amazon and force things that do not make sense." "Company culture does not align with what we want our customers to think about us."

Every question is in a "tell me about a time" format based on the Chewy principles. It's exhausting....

      Interview

Completed all rounds of the interview process. It’s based on Amazon’s interview process, so expect to be asked a series of pre-written questions while someone types away at their keyboard and doesn’t make eye contact. I had one interviewer admit openly that they had bad work-life balance and frequently had to work weekends and late nights (and I would be expected to do the same lol). I got weird vibes from a couple interviews, so I honestly wasn’t bent out of shape that I didn’t get an offer. Despite an over abundance of positive feedback and how I was “perfect for the job,” I received contradictory feedback.

Just read Amazon’s prep questions—they're basically the same.
