I applied online. I interviewed at Contrast Security (New York, NY) in May 2019
Interview
Had one initial interview from someone in HR and as other posters have mentioned, I waited more than a week and heard nothing. Tried contacting the recruiter and all I got was radio silence. Pretty clear that the culture must suck or the company is simply incompetent. Hard pass.
I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Contrast Security (Remote, OR) in Feb 2019
Interview
I originally applied for the Senior Full Stack Engineer position but after I was contacted I also found out about their Senior Software Engineer (Java) position which I had an equal interest in.
The initial interview went well with an individual who indicated he was in charge of Engineering at Contrast Security and he indicated that he would contact his colleague concerning the the Senior Software Engineer (Java) position and I would be contacted again with a project involving development of a Java Agent for security. I was told that the project results would be weighed for BOTH of the positions.
I was contacted by this 2nd individual who I believe is a Senior Engineer with Contrast Security and he indicated he wanted (i) a discussion and (ii) for me to indicate if I was interested in the take-home project.
This 2nd interview was in my opinion conducted in a very unprofessional matter. Most of the questions were behavioral rather than technical in nature and when I asked about technologies used in developing Java Security agents (e.g. ASM, Javassist, etc.) he became testy and indicated his specialty was .NET rather than Java. At the end of the interview I asked if I would be receiving the Java Agent project (which had been indicated in the initial conversation and email) he was vague and iffy.
At the end of the day of the 2nd telephone conversation I received an automated rejection email rather than the Java Agent project I was looking forward to doing.
Basically I came away with the impression that Contrast Security is disorganized and unprofessional in their hiring practices which doesn't bode well for them in attracting quality Software Engineers going forward.

Interview
Avoid at all costs. They don't even let you show off your skills or give you a proper technical accessment before making a decision. If you can answer a few questions as fluff maybe they will actually attempt to review your skills. They openly admit to having no QA department. What at the surface appears to be a tech shop looking for talent is clearly not. Don't waste your time.
